Defender Tomas Palacios will get his first ever call-up for Inter Milan in this evening’s match away to Monza.
This according to today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews.
21-year-old defender Palacios joined Inter at the end of the summer transfer window.
The Nerazzurri had in fact been pursuing Palacios for much of the month of August.
The Argentine is the player who Inter identified as a defensive reinforcement for the left of their back three.
Palacios is a player who Inter view as a long-term option in the position of Alessandro Bastoni.
The 21-year-old will back up Bastoni this season, although it is not clear how much playing time he’ll get.
Inter signed Palacios partly in response to the serious injury keeping Tajon Buchanan out of action for the first few months of this season.
The logic is that Carlos Augusto will need to play more at wingback with Buchanan on the sidelines. Therefore, he cannot back up Bastoni as much.
Accordingly, Palacios is a player Inter are ready to back as a backup for the Italian international.
Tomas Palacios To Get First Serie A Call-Up For Inter Vs Monza
Palacios will not be in the starting eleven for Inter this evening.
The Argentina Under-20 international will, however, be on the bench.
The Gazzetta reports that Augusto will actually start in Bastoni’s place on the left of the back three.
It is simply far too early for Palacios to make a start for Inter just a couple weeks after his deadline day move.
However, it is not inconceivable that Palacios could get on the pitch as a substitute.
Inter invested a not-inconsiderable sum to bring the 21-year-old to Serie A. They do believe that he can develop into a real option in their back three.
And whether he plays or not, today marks the beginning of Palacios’s Serie A adventure.
