Legendary Manchester United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel noted how Man City fans failed to create an atmosphere worthy of a Champions League evening while hosting Inter Milan.

The Cityzens hosted the Nerazzurri at the Etihad Stadium on the opening matchday of the European campaign.

The Italian champions produced a solid showing at the back and were close to scoring. In the end, they survived a late onslaught to return home with a valuable point.

Nevertheless, many were left disappointed by the less-than-thrilling atmosphere inside the stadium. Even Inter playmaker Hakan Calhanoglu mentioned it in his post-match interview.

Schmeichel dwelled on this particular point, describing the ambiance at the Etihad as “dead”.

‘I like good football and I like excitement from the crowd. But It was dead,” said the 60-year-old during his post-match appearance on CBS Sports via The Daily Mail.

“The Etihad today was absolutely dead. The only people we could hear were the Inter supporters who were quite good. But there’s no atmosphere in the Etihad today.

“Normally you’d think ‘well, a big European night’, but it didn’t happen for them.”

The Dane reached the pinnacle of his playing career while representing Man United between 1991 and 1999. He was also one of the heroes in Denmark’s astonishing Euro 92 triumph.

Curiously, the custodian ended his career in 2003 following a brief spell at Man City.

For their part, Inter Milan can expect a much more raucous atmosphere on Sunday when they lock horns with their crosstown rivals AC Milan in the first Derby della Madonnina of the season.
