Inter Milan captain Lautaro Martinez has gone further into a season without scoring than he has since the 2018-19 campaign.

This is highlighted in today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews, who note that only in his first season at Inter has the Argentine waited this long.

Inter captain Martinez made it five matches without a goal in the derby against AC Milan on Sunday.

The 27-year-old did manage to assist a goal for the first time this season. He found Federico Dimarco for Inter’s first half goal.

However, Martinez lacked a threat in the penalty area.

That has been a theme for the Argentine throughout the first few weeks of the campaign.

Martinez has had a few decent chances. Perhaps if he were luckier or more clinical, he could have finished one or two and the conversation would be different.

But the reality is that the Nerazzurri captain has not looked like nearly the goal threat he was last season.

Lautaro Martinez Suffers Worst Start To Season In Front Of Goal Since 2018-19

Martinez missed one match for Inter due to injury. He was absent from the team’s Serie A win over Lecce in August, their second match of the season.

Otherwise, the Argentine has started all the Nerazzurri’s league matches.

Meanwhile, Martinez was a substitute in Inter’s Champions League opener against Manchester City, a 0-0 draw.

All without a goal for Inter’s captain.

Last season, by contrast, Martinez found the back of the net five times in Inter’s first five matches of the campaign.

And in general, the 27-year-old has rarely had a goal drought this bad. He has been Inter’s top scorer in each of the past three seasons. Last season, he was the top scorer for all of Serie A.

In his very first season at Inter, the 2018-19 campaign, Martinez had to wait until the end of September to score his first ever goal in Nerazzurri colours.

The circumstances were very different then, though. The Argentine was not a regular starter while he found his feet at Inter.

Martinez did score against Cagliari on September 29th of that season.

And the Inter captain will be hoping that is a precedent that he can follow this time around. Inter take on Udinese on the 28th of this month.
