Inter Milan midfielder Nicolo Barella will undergo medical tests on a muscle problem picked up in the derby against AC Milan.

This according to Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia, via FCInterNews.

Inter’s squad returned to training today after Sunday’s derby defeat against Milan.

Midfielder Barella had started in the derby. However, he came off during the second half, with Piotr Zielinski replacing him.

Inter coach Simone Inzaghi’s decision to substitute Barella meant that he had changed his entire midfield.

The coach had already removed Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Hakan Calhanoglu for Davide Frattesi and Kristjan Asllani.

Therefore taking Barella off seemed a strange choice at the time, with the other two starters in the central trio having already left the pitch.

But after the match, Inzaghi explained that Barella had been dealing with a bit of a knock.

The 27-year-old related this to the Inter staff on the bench after the substitution.

Nicolo Barella To Undergo Medical Tests Following Injury Scare Vs AC Milan

The Inter squad had yesterday to rest following the derby.

But today, the team returned to training.

For Barella, the questions was whether or not the former Cagliari man would be able to shake off his injury for Sunday’s match.

And according to Sky, the Italian international is still dealing with the issue. He continues to feel some muscular discomfort.

Therefore, the broadcaster reports, Inter have scheduled medical tests for Barella.

This had not initially been the case. The Nerazzurri staff took a “wait and see” approach.

But with Barella not in condition to train today, Inter will look to get a clearer picture of his injury.

Inter’s next match will be against Udinese on Saturday. Then, they take on Red Star Belgrade in the Champions League.

Medical tests will determine whether Barella can be available for those matches.
