Inter Milan coach Simone Inzaghi admits that his side “needed to be more clinical” in their 1-0 Serie A win over Venezia.
The Nerazzurri coach spoke to Italian broadcaster DAZN, via FCInterNews, after the narrow victory.
In the end, Inter got the three points they were after against Venezia this evening.
But it certainly wasn’t a straightforward victory for the Nerazzurri.
There was late drama as Venezia wingback Marin Sverko thought that he’d equalized late in stoppage time.
However, the goal was disallowed that the 26-year-old had handled the ball as he turned it into the net.
Meanwhile, Inter had a goal disallowed for a narrow offside by wingback Federico Dimarco.
And there were a few instances in which Inter had what looked to be good chances, but shot high and wide.
They also faced Filip Stankovic, a Nerazzurri youth team goalkeeper on loan at Venezia, who produced a string of outstanding saves against his parent club.
Inzaghi Admits Inter “Needed To Be More Clinical” Vs Venezia
Inter did break through midway through the second half.
It was captain Lautaro Martinez who headed home from an inch-perfect Federico Dimarco cross for the goal that was worth all three points for his team.
However, the fact that the Nerazzurri were not able to score made it a much more nerve-wracking match for them and their fans.
And Inter keeper Yann Sommer needed to bail his team out a few times.
“Clearly we needed to be more clinical,” admitted Inter coach Inzaghi.
“But I also gave my compliments to the team at the end of the first half,” he said. “We missed some good chances from Mkhitaryan and Thuram.”
“The match would have been easier if we’d scored those,” he said.
Inzaghi noted that “At the start of the second half we started to lose some of our compactness between the lines.”
“That was partly because of substitutions that Venezia made.”
“We allowed a chance, which Sommer did well to keep out.”
“And then once we went ahead, the big flaw in our game was that we didn’t kill it off.”
“In Serie A, matches are always in the balance,” Inzaghi said.
“In the final action, there’s a handball and a push on Bisseck,” the Inter coach added. “But you have to be more clinical.”
“You can’t just be 1-0 up with seven minutes of added time.”
“But credit also has to go to Venezia,” the Nerazzurri coach added.
And of next weekend’s top of the table clash with Napoli, Inzaghi said that “It will be an important match.”
“But on Wednesday we’re facing one of the strongest teams in Europe,” the Inter coach looked ahead to his team’s Champions League match against Arsenal.
“We’ll need to be organized for a great match. Because we’re playing against a team with massive quality.”
“I’m only thinking about Arsenal at the moment,” Inzaghi said.
