Goalkeeper Josep Martinez admits that it was “hugely emotional” for him to make his Serie A debut for Inter Milan against his old side Genoa.
The Spaniard gave his thoughts to Italian broadcaster DAZN, via FCInterNews, after the 1-0 Nerazzurri win.
Goalkeeper Josep Martinez has had to wait a while to make his first Serie A start for Inter Milan.
The former RB Leipzig goalkeeper joined the Nerazzurri from Genoa last summer.
And it was against his former team the Grifone that Martinez has finally put on the gloves for Inter in Serie A.
It was an injury to first-choice Inter keeper Yann Sommer that handed Martinez this opportunity.
Inter signed the 26-year-old to be the backup to Sommer, and then to eventually succeed the Swiss.
But Sommer has proven a tough player to displace from the Inter starting eleven so far.

But it was an injury that forced Yann Sommer out of the Inter Milan starting eleven.
The Swiss suffered a thumb fracture in training this week.

Therefore, Martinez has had to step up and take Sommer’s place between the post for the Nerazzurri.
It was certainly a positive Serie A debut in an Inter shirt for Martinez. He kept a clean sheet, doing his part with a couple of excellent saves.
Now, Martinez has started to stake his claim at Inter. Up next is next weekend’s top-of-the-table Serie A clash with Napoli.
Inter Serie A debutante Martinez admitted that “I’ll always remember that save.”
“For me it was a special match,” the Spanish international continued. “I felt so many emotions.”
Martinez continued that “It was important for us to win.”
“We weren’t brilliant,” the Inter keeper added. “That’s true.”
“But we brought it home. And that was the most important aspect.”
