Beppe Marotta wants to bring Gabriele Oriali back to Inter as the club’s new team manager, Tuttosport reported today.
Oriali made almost 400 appearances for Inter as a player and spent 11 years as part of the Nerazzurri’s management after retirement, acting as a bridge between the players and the rest of the club.
Marotta is looking for someone to fulfill exactly the same role now, regardless of who is coaching the team next season, and has placed the 68-year-old at the top of his list.
“Oriali is considered the best option for this position because he’s already filled it once and has 30 years of experience at Inter behind him,” the Turin-based publication said.
“He’s not the only name being considered, though, so if he were to turn down the offer Inter would look for someone else.”
Oriali has been working as Italy’s team manager since 2014 and could prefer to stay with the national team as they prepare for next summer’s European Championships.
However, Marotta hopes the prospect of returning to the club he loves will be enough to persuade him to leave.
Oriali was already close to returning to Inter in 2017 when he held talks with Piero Ausilio, but Walter Sabatini’s subsequent arrival led to a change of plans.
Inter have already appointed a team manager in recent years, bringing Dejan Stankovic back to the club for the 2015-16 on the request of then-coach Roberto Mancini.
