Inter and Milan will hand in a planning application to knock down and rebuild San Siro to the city council next week, according to Ansa.

The Nerazzurri’s chief executive Alessandro Antonello confirmed the news along with Milan’s president Paolo Scaroni and CEO Ivan Gazidis, during a ‘very cordial’ meeting with mayor Giuseppe Sala and the council’s general director Christian Malangone.

The clubs’ so-called ‘master plan’ has been formulated by a joint focus group which began working on the project last November.

Sala publicly stated his opposition to the idea of demolishing San Siro after Milan and Cortino d’Ampezzo won the rights to host the 2026 Winter Olympics last week.

The International Olympic Committee’s decision to hand Milan the games complicates Inter and Milan’s plans, because San Siro will host the opening ceremony.

It seems the clubs must therefore finish the building work in its entirety before 2026 or wait seven years to begin anything.
