Inter’s bid to offload Gabriel Barbosa is proving far harder than the forward’s numbers suggest it should be.
‘Gabigol’ has scored eight goals in nine matches for Flamengo this season, moving him towards the top of the Brasileirao’s goal-scoring charts.
The 22-year-old’s form has also seen him enter the league’s all-time top 15 scorers, with 50 goals in Brazil’s top flight.
Yet Inter still do not have any offers for the forward, having signed him in a €30 million deal from Santos in 2016.
Barbosa endured a torrid debut season with Inter, scoring just one goal in a 1-0 win against Bologna.
The forward was then sent on loan to Benfica, where he made a similarly poor impact, before being recalled and moved back to Santos.
Flamengo then signed him on a twelve-month loan at the beginning of 2019, which will expire at the end of December.
No club seems willing to make a permanent investment on him, though, meaning Inter will be unable to recoup any money for him.
Suning’s decision to spend €70 million on Barbosa and Joao Mario three summers ago continues to haunt the club, as they battle against UEFA’s Financial Fair Play regulations.
With no serious offers for either player, it seems Inter will have to take pain for a little longer yet.
