Dario Tommasi, the president of the Italian players association, has blasted the idea of holding postponed Europa League last 16 matches at neutral venues.
Inter versus Getafe and Sevilla versus Roma were both postponed by European football’s governing body UEFA on Wednesday afternoon off the back of Spanish government introducing travel restrictions between Spain and Italy.
It has been suggested by some news outlets that in order to fulfil the fixture, the game could be moved to a neutral venue but Tommasi believes that this should not be being thought about given the severity of the Coronavirus crisis.
Another report has suggested that rather than trying to play two legs and due to the extraordinary circumstances, the tie could be turned into a one legged affair.
UEFA, when confirming the postponement of the above games, said they would make a decision on the matter in due course.
“The World Health Organization has declared Coronavirus as a pandemic. It means that it is absurd to speak of a neutral venue for football. Unfortunately there is no neutral venue in this emergency,” he stressed in an interview with Italian news agency ANSA.
