Inter defender Diego Godin touched on the Nerazzurri’s impressive 2-0 win over Atalanta earlier this evening in an interview with Italian broadcaster InterTV after the game.
“We are finishing a tough season considering all that’s happened. In the end we finished very well, especially defensively. The work is done by the whole team, from Lukaku and Lautaro to the goalkeeper. Important to grow and improve.”
He gave a quick review of his first year in Serie A with the Nerazzurri. He signed as a free agent last summer after his contract expired with long term home Atletico Madrid.
“I watched this league from a distance, you could see it was tough physically. All the teams are strong. I faced a period of growth, I had arrived here playing in a different form to the one I was used to with Atletico and also in the national team.
“Then I found my place on the pitch, in time I understood what Conte wants from me. Serie A is different from la Liga, tough, physical. It’s a very balanced league, especially at the top.”
Finally, Godin spoke about the Europa League and the Nerazzurri’s attempts to win the trophy this season. The club face Getafe next week in a single legged match at a neutral venue in Germany.
“It’s a competition I respect very much, it’s brought a lot to my career. It’s a great competition, especially when you start from the beginning. It makes you grow if you get to the end and it raises the bar.
“Now we have to keep going like this, we’re prepared for the competition. It’s an opportunity to win something, we have to have the will to raise the trophy.”
The 34-year-old Godin, who is contracted to the Nerazzurri until 2022, has made 31 appearances across all competitions so far this season, for a total of 2350 minutes. In that time, he has scored one goal, provided one assist and helped the side keep 11 clean sheets.
The former Atletico Madrid veteran suffered this season as he struggled to adapt to coach Antonio Conte’s three-man defense.
