Inter centre-back Alessandro Bastoni felt concentration was key in the win over Juventus and revealed what Antonio Conte told him about his brilliant assist.
The defender and his team-mates kept Cristiano Ronaldo and Alvaro Morata quiet as the Nerazzurri won the Derby d’Italia for the first time since 2016.
It wasn’t just defensively that Bastoni contributed though as he provided a brilliant assist for Nicolo Barella’s second goal in the 2-0 win.
The 21-year-old strode out of defence and sent an inch-perfect long pass through to the Italian international, who fired confidently into the net to put the seal on what was a dominant performance at San Siro.
The result sends Inter seven points clear of the defending champions and level with Milan at the top of Serie A ahead of Monday night’s trip to Crotone.
Bastoni spoke to Sky Sport Italia immediately after the match and admitted that Conte had given him some gentle ribbing over his fantastic assist.
He said: “We felt good, we really wanted this and we prepared well for it.
“Last year we were close to surpassing Juve and couldn’t do it so congratulations to everyone tonight.
“Maybe against other teams we’d have taken more risks but today we were focused for 90 minutes and it went very well.
“I think you could see on the pitch how well we’d prepared.
“The assist? We’ve been trying that for a long time and it was only tonight that it worked!
“In fact, Conte said to me: ‘finally you’ve managed it’!
“The midfielders really helped us out tonight.
“Even when you play the smaller teams it’s a tough game and one vs one you can struggle against anyone.
“When we’re all together like this we’re all better.”
Cristiano Ronaldo has over 700 career goals but barely got a sniff at San Siro.
Bastone said: “We did well, it was great team work.”
