Arturo Vidal has no intention of settling for a supporting role at Inter and is targeting a return to the starting line-up, according to an Italian media report today.
The Chilean midfielder has missed Inter’s last two league matches with a knee injury and his time out has coincided with Christian Eriksen’s return to form, meaning Vidal has lost his place in Antonio Conte’s first-choice XI.
Tuttosport’s print edition said Vidal was hard at work in a bid to regain his spot in the side, having trained on both of Inter’s days off at Appiano Gentile earlier this week.
Conte is thought to have appreciated the 33-year-old’s commitment to recovering full fitness and now has a healthy selection dilemma between Vidal and Eriksen.
Inter will only benefit from both players fighting each other to start alongside Marcelo Brozovic and Nicolo Barella, the Turin-based paper argued.
Vidal was an untouchable starter during the first half of the season and this possibly led to Conte overworking the midfielder, causing him to suffer injury issues.
Conte was desperate to sign Vidal from Barcelona last summer so that Inter could benefit from his ‘serial winner’ mentality, with most of his Nerazzurri teammates still chasing their first major trophy.
Vidal’s pride was hurt by Conte’s public criticism following the 6-2 win over Crotone last month, the report claimed, and he is now eager to make up for lost time in the final few months of the season.
