Inter were spared an injustice by VAR during last night’s 1-1 draw at Napoli, as per a report in the Italian media today.
Napoli were awarded by penalty by referee Daniele Doveri in the closing stages at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona, when Stefan de Vrij was deemed to have fouled Piotr Zielinski.
Gazzetta dello Sport’s print edition explained that the penalty was initially overturned after an offside call, before VAR official Paolo Mazzoleni confirmed Zielinski was onside.
Doveri was called over to check the incident on his pitch-side monitor though, and at that point he realised De Vrij had got the ball anyway (before being struck by Zielinski).
Inter’s match in Naples was otherwise free of major incident, the Milan-based paper explained, as Antonio Conte’s side took another small step towards the Serie A title.
Christian Eriksen equalised in the second half after Samir Handanovic’s comical own goal shortly before half-time.
