Legendary former Inter defender Beppe Bergomi feels that the Nerazzurri still struggle to make the most of their dominance in matches and put results beyond opponents.
Speaking to Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia, the former defender emphasized how the Nerazzurri had once again showed that they struggle to kill games off in their 2-1 derby loss to AC Milan on Saturday.
Inter had created more and better chances than their city rivals for much of the first half against the Rossoneri, but were only able to find the back of the net once, through Ivan Perisic’s well-taken strike from a Hakan Calhanoglu corner.
In the second half, the Rossoneri pushed for an equalizer, and they not only managed to cancel out the Nerazzurri’s advantage but also scored a second before the Nerazzurri could catch their breath.
Bergomi feels that this is becoming a problem for Inter this season, stating that “Inter are strong, but to win games they seem to require a certain tempo.”
“They’re a team that struggle to kill matches off, and can’t always manage the matches,” he went on. “Then in the derby, with the substitutions, Inter had to play in a different way, and against Milan they were not successful.”
“On the other hand,” he added, “Milan’s substitutions also changed things.”
And on Simone Inzaghi’s decision to take off Ivan Perisic, Bergomi said that “If it’s not a strain but just a cramp, as a coach I would have told him to stay on the pitch and hold on.”
“He’s too important for Inter,” he explained, “if it wasn’t essential to take him off I would have kept him on the pitch.”
