Inter defender Alessandro Bastoni feels that the Nerazzurri have what it takes to go toe-to-toe with Liverpool in this evening’s Champions League round of sixteen second leg.
Speaking to Italian broadcaster SportMediaset yesterday, the 22-year-old emphasized that his team feel confident that they can impose their game on the Reds and try to get a result and move onto the quarter-finals of the competition.
Inter played well in the first leg at the San Siro considering the quality of their opposition, but were punished on set pieces and could not finish any of their chances, so they go into Anfield needing to overhaul a 2-0 deficit.
This challenge looks very formidable even if the Nerazzurri do manage to play as well as they did at home at one of Europe’s most intimidating away grounds.
However, if Inter can stick to their style of play and keep trying to create chances as they know how to, getting a win is not impossible.
“We’ll go there and play our game,” Bastoni said. “It’s not impossible, we believe, we have studied Liverpool and we know how to cause them problems.”
“As I’ve said before, we were satisfied with our attitude,” he said of the first leg. “Losing 2-0 hurt and perhaps it wasn’t deserved, we studied Liverpool and how to cause problems for them.”
The defender predicted that “We’ll see an Inter that has never lost its identity against any opponent, where in the Champions League or in Serie A, we’ll think positively and try to impose our game.”
He added that “We’ll have to try to have fun and enjoy the evening, for many of us this is our first round of sixteen tie in the Champions League, these are great matches that everyone wants to play in.”
“Taking the pitch at Anfield will be exciting,” he added.
