Inter coach Simone Inzaghi’s recent experiment with Joaquin Correa playing as a Number Ten behind the strikers is aimed at allowing the midfielders to be more of a goal threat behind the striker partnership.

This according to today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, who report that the coach is thinking about how to put a midfielder in attacking positions more often as he reworks the team behind Romelu Lukaku and Lautaro Martinez.

Correa played as an attacking midfielder in a 3-4-1-2 formation in yesterday’s friendly win over Lugano, performing well in a role that saw him supporting Lukaku and Martinez rather than being part of the frontline.

The coach appreciates the Argentine’s dribbling ability and ability to hold onto the ball between the lines just in front of the opposition defense, and this could be something he wishes to see more of from his midfielders next season.

Correa has been used in the Number Ten role in training and in yesterday’s friendlies, but with Hakan Calhanoglu returning to training it could be the Turk who is assigned the position on a more permanent basis.

Calhanoglu was used as more of a box-to-box midfielder in his first season with the Nerazzurri, but the 28-year-old’s technical quality, passing vision, and dribbling can certainly enable him to play as more of a Number Ten as he has throughout his career, whilst the coach would also like to unleash his long-range shooting more often.

Moreover, the newly-arrived Henrikh Mkhitaryan is also very proficient in an attacking midfield role, and this could be another season why Inzaghi wants to set his team up with such a player linking midfield and attack, with Correa being used as the placeholder currently.
