Inter defender Stefan de Vrij feels that his side’s performance against Sampdoria in yesterday evening’s Serie A draw was not a bad one, but that they lacked a bit of cutting edge in front of goal.
Speaking to Italian broadcaster DAZN after the match, via FCInterNews, the Dutchman suggested that the only thing that the Nerazzurri’s performance was missing was that final decisive action to turn their chances into something more tangible.
Inter held onto the majority of possession against Sampdoria, and they spent most of the match trying to work openings to score.
The Nerazzurri didn’t have any shortage of attempts on goal, although few that actually tested Blucerchiati keeper Emil Audero.
The result was that, for all of their huffing and puffing, the Nerazzurri were unable to come away with anything better than a point from the Marassi.
For his part, de Vrij feels that whilst it was a blunt display in front of goal, it was far from a bad one against a tough Sampdoria team, however.
“We just lacked the goal,” the 31-year-old suggested, “we had lots of chances, even we defenders were joining the attack, we came close but unfortunately tonight it didn’t want to go in.”
The defender added that “I think we’re stronger than we were over the first half of the season, we have everyone available, we have a lot of matches to play and it’s important to be able to choose from everyone in the team.”
“There’s room for growth,” he continued, “we’ve already grown, we’ve improved in the defensive phase, we concede fewer goals and we create a lot of chances to potentially score from.”
“This evening we did so, but we lacked the goal.”
