Goalkeeper Yann Sommer is already convincing Inter Milan they made the right choice to turn to him as a replacement for Andre Onana.

This according to today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews.

This summer, goalkeeper Onana was Inter’s big sale. The Nerazzurri sent the Cameroonian to Manchester United in exchange for a fee well in excess of €50 million.

Replacing Onana was never going to be a straightforward task.

Last season, the former Ajax keeper had settled in and become a vital cog in Simone Inzaghi’s team.

A lot of that was down to Onana’s influence in the team’s buildup play. The 27-year-old brought an entirely new dimension with the ball at his feet.

But at the same time, Onana’s saves could hardly be overlooked.

In the Champions League in particularly, the Cameroonian was one of Inter’s outstanding players. He popped up with key saves in every one of their knockout ties to reach the final.

And the sense of calm and confidence that Onana gave to the Inter backline was priceless.

Yann Sommer Making Inter Milan Feel They’ve Made The Right Choice

The player who Inter turned to to replace Onana was 34-year-old Swiss international Sommer.

The Nerazzurri decided to go with experience and proven quality to replace Onana in the short term rather than taking a gamble on a young player to grow into the role.

Sommer had spent the second half of last season at Bayern Munich. There, he won the Bundesliga title.

Both with Borussia Monchengladbach and with the Swiss national team, Sommer has spent a decade building a strong reputation.

But the question was always whether Sommer would be able to write the next chapter at Inter.

Early signs are positive. Sommer has kept three clean sheets from three matches to begin life in Serie A.

The Gazzetta note that, behind the scenes, everyone is happy with what they’ve seen from Sommer.

The feeling in assessing the Swiss’s early performances is that his assuredness and a couple key saves have already started to vindicate the club’s choice.

Sommer may not be an option for the longer term. But for the time being, he looks to be just what Inter needed.
