The handball penalty given away by Denzel Dumfries in Inter Milan’s Serie A loss to Udinese has been deemed a “clear penalty.”
Today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews, also argue that Udinese should have had another spot kick in the second half.
Referee Matteo Marchetti had a few important decisions to make in Inter Milan’s Serie A match against Udinese yesterday.
And in the view of the Gazzetta dello Sport, the official got all of them right, barring one at the end.
Firstly, there was Inter’s opening goal. Marchetti and his assistants correctly determined that there was no offside from Denzel Dumfries as he met Marcus Thuram’s flick-on.
Then, in a pivotal moment in the match, Inter wingback Denzel Dumfries blocked a header from Udinese defender Nicolo Bertola with his arm.
Initially, Marchetti did not spot the infringement. However, VAR would advise the referee to have a second look at his monitor, and following this, he pointed to the spot.
Dumfries Handball Vs Udinese A “Clear Penalty”

In the view of the Gazzetta dello Sport, Marchetti unquestionably made the correct decision in the hand.
Dumfries could have little argument, as his arm was extended well away from his body.
Then, in the second half, Inter thought they had found the equalizer through Federico Dimarco.
However, a VAR check showed that striker Marcus Thuram was offside in the buildup. There was no question of this.
Furthermore, the Gazzetta argue, Udinese could have had a second penalty.
During the second half, there was an incident in Inter’s penalty area which saw Francesco Pio Esposito wrestle Udinese midfielder Adam Buksa to the ground.
The Gazzetta argue that this could definitely have been a penalty. However, Marchetti decided to show leniency.
The handball rule is a joke, 95% of the time they get the call wrong. On plays where there was absolutely no intent to use the arm but the ball just happened to rebound hit someones arm shouldn’t be called. In my opinion it should just be a drop ball as if it were to hit the ref. I cant remember how many times ive seen hand balls given just because the ball hits someones arm as they try to get up off the floor with absolutely no intention other than to standup or a rebound off someone that again hits their arm with no intention at all. Yet the calls that should be made VAR never tells the ref to review or the ref just says play on. So there wont be anymore hand balls the players should start wearing jerseys with no sleeves that way the players cant use their hands. So there wont be anymore hand balls, pushing and grabbing. aits dumb how the game is getting. The players safety should be number one priority. Some players can rocket the ball and if a ball is headed straight to my face or head and i put my hands up to protect myself i shouldn’t have to worry about getting called for a hand ball. Its a joke how the game is. Also i feel they league should show the actual video with the lines when an offside is called and not the stupid cartoons that only show u a clip of what they want to show and not the actual play. If thats the case i too could create a cartoon of every goal ever scored against Inter and they should all be offside. I to know how to use an animation program and can create cartoons showing everyone that has ever scored on Inter was offside. The “Ball Technology” is only what they wanna show. Why dont they show the second the player kickes the ball where the player receiving is at the same time. Sorry for venting, its just all these calls game after game, year after year for all teams not just Inter.
