Roberto Mancini’s men had a difficult evening against Wolfsburg in Volkswagen Arena where they lost 3-1 in the first leg of round of 16 in Europa League. The Inter coach spoke to the media after the hard defeat:
After have started the match in a positive way, what happened?
“We started well then we suffered when the started to grow in to the game and gave away three goals. We have to be more careful and then there were some misstakes by Carrizo. The game started well to bad for all the errors we made. Their goals were all given away from us”.
The change of formation had a negative impact on the squad?
“As soon as we changed formation we made the misstake that led to 2-1 but already in the first half after our leading goal we started to loose the grip of the match. At the second half I had to change something because they were very strong on the wings”.
Can you see a comeback in the return?
“It was clear that it would be difficult, we shouldn’t leave so much space for their advantage. We can’t commit so many mistakes or loose the ball, they are strong on counterattacks. The goals is possible to do but we have to be more solid, that’s the most crucial part”.
When you coached Galatasaray in Turkey your defense made misstakes just like Inter. According to you is the defense lacking quality or form?
“The misstakes continues, but with experience hopefully it’s getting less and less errors. We have improved and the team must try not to suffer so much. We have to do just that. The guys have improved a lot but unfortunately they are still doing technical errors”.
FcIN: In the beginning of the first half Inter created dangerous chances on Wolfsburg: There are no regret of not having taking advantage of their misstakes when you played as best?
“We started the game very well and we should have scored a second goal but it wasn’t possible, I said this earlier: We started to play defensively way to early and we left to much space for Wolfsburg”.
FcIN: What message would you like to send to Carrizo, considering his ‘delicate’ role as a goalkeeper?
“A goalkeeper can make technical errors just as other players does them, The defenders also made errors they passed the ball to the wrong foot of a keeper instead of playing it up front. The goalkeeper isn’t a player the defenders must have the courage to play ahead”.
If you could go back in time, would you still play Carrizo?
“He has always played in Europa League and he has done well. It isn’t his fault that we lost. Mistakes can happen to anyone. A punishable goal? We had the ball and lost it, we played badly, A conceded goal you can take but not if you have giving it away. That is absolutely not acceptable”.

our defence stands to close to the keeper in all situations during the game. it’s easy for opposition strikers to push our defenders further back and force them to make mistakes. it’s what we have been doing for months now
This is main event, and if i were you i will not play my 2nd goalkeeper…
So many misstakes *what?* XD
I was wondering, if Handanovic is a batman then Carrizzo is his Robin. If u understand what I mean..
If you don’t let goalkeeper like Handanovic play, then you deserve this punishment. I am afraid Handa will leave Inter in summer.
That’s why i HATE back passing to GK ……specially to Carizzo
“It isn’t his fault that we lost. ” sorry mancho but i think that’s his fault..he had a bad day so what shit happens but we need to speak truth ..
for me, mancio will never play carrzzo anymore, mancini is a typical classic gentleman who wouldn’t let his anger/emotions blow by saying harsh comment, especially to his own player. he protecs his players just like mou did with the priciple “right or wrong it’s my player”.
if you read the last answer, you’ll find it, “it isn’t his fault that we lost”, but the next is “..conceded goal you can take but not if you have given it away. that is absolutely not acceptable”
for some of you compare mancini to mazzari, i think there’s a huge different, mazzari blames anyone including the motherfuckin rain! on their stubborness, well considering carizzo past performances it was no suprise that mancini trusted him tonight but this argument we should wait to be confirmed, if mancini still play carrizo in the next match them we can say he is as stubborn as mazzari.
I agree. Do you guys remember how Julio Cesar became the first line-up? Toldo made a mistake in a game, I could not remember the opponent, but I still remember that goal which brought Cesar the first line-up. I remember Toldo blamed him for not giving his second chance.
You’re right, between Mancini and Mazzari there’s a huge differences. But you know there’s one ugly similarity, we still keep on losing and embarrassing the name of the club with performances like that. If it was ones or twice or a few times, ok. But we continues repeat the same old story. After Mancini arrived we lost from Roma, Udinese, Torino, Sassuolo, Napoli and Fiorentina. And made draws with Karabakh, Lazio, Juventus, Empoli, Celtic and Napoli. That’s for only four months, we still can’t win at least single game against serious opponent. We’re 9th in Serie A and very close to be eliminated from Europa League. What do you think about that?
true, we still lost. but in my subjective opinion the team is improving given the fact that the players are based on mazzari’s. improving, on the way inter play, yes traditionally serie a fans don’t give a shit about posession, how we play etc, only the result counts.
the difference is when mazzari’s still there, there’s no hope for inter, play very bad and even if reinforcements come in the next summer the change seems unlikely.
while with mancini, he said in the beginning he wants to adopt the way big clubs play, so far, again in my subjective opinion, he made it. the only game when i saw hopeless inter was the draw againts empoli, the other games inter play improvingly from mazzari’s. we almost won againts juve, and napoli last week, and the loss i belive is caused by lack of luck and clinical finishing.
the point is there’s a hope, when mancini is given a full summer to built his team, inter will be better than this and mazzari’s
Wrong. I’m one of those fans, who want to see better playing, offensive Inter and won’t be complaining so much about the results. But with Mancini that is very unlikely to happen, you know why? I’ll give you two examples about Mancini’s mindset and understanding of football. Inter against Fiorentina, they are with nine players because of injuries, we’re losing in front of our fans and desperately need a goal, because they are our direct rival for Europa League spots. And what Mancini does, made substitution D’Ambrosio for Santon, when have offensive players like Hernanes or Puscas on the bench. Wolfsburg against Inter, after good first half the result is 1-1 and around 60th minute Mancini substitute one of his best players on the field and offensive player Hernanes with defender Vidic, who was proved that he can’t play in three mans defense.
Without a doubt carrizo should not have played this match. Although Mancini made good points, in the beginning inter played the ball forward consistently and then slowly they kept on passing to the keeper again and again and again.. (Inter defenders always do this). If you keep passing to the keeper your bound to make mistakes and a good example of this is when icardi took advantage of two or three goals this year from defenders back passing to the keeper.
Absolute disgrace!!
I hope he’s just saying this to give confidence to carrizo…
I really do hope so as well because if i see Carrizo starting I am not even going to watch the game.
He is going to start carrizo…you think Walter was stubborn? Lol guess yall never saw mancini. These kind of decisions is what cost him his job last time around and am afraid that it might very well happen again if he doesn’t change his ways..some players are just not good enough and putting trust in them is futile..Carrizo isn’t that bad and yeah everyone makes mistakes..but good players make less mistakes..much less 3 on the same day? He just isn’t good enough. If we sell Handanovic without getting a replacement we can kiss next season goodbye along with this one. #forzainter
These things happen. what bothers me is we always make our opponents win easily by giving cheap goals its a habit now.
Carrizo made mistakes that is true he messed up but so did the whole team. I wont blame Carrizo only,I still remember his penalty saves and some great saves he made its true tonight wasn’t his night or rather our night. After scoring we had the match under our control but faded easily when they started attacking during the end of the first half. Palacio missed, Mancini made a mistake by playing with 3 defenders or switching to 3 defenders during such a crucial time, guarin played a bad match, Icardi was isolated , Juan positioning was bad. Vidic could have prevented that cheap foul that caused the third goal. Di ambrosio was reckless leaving giving out space. You see the point is the whole team was not good.I really love Inter and I wish we unite as fans and stop the blaming game because to blame one or two individuals is unfair if their is a fault that keeps reoccuring its collective.
Everyone made mistakes but we can still go through its hard but not impossible. Remember we are kings of comebacks that bayern match we won away that tottenham match with a depleted squad we almost did it. This time we shall do it. How can we win if we disbelieve. Its hard but doable we have the keys to win we are not as bad as we look its true we show alot of weaknesses but we can improve.
Forza INTER
Your right blaming isn’t going to do us any good..but with respect to the mistakes happen thing….yeah every now and again people make mistakes even world class players do..but what distinguishes the world class players from the average ones is that they learn from their mistakes.. If you repeatedly make the same mistakes then I’m afraid you need to be critisized. It’s always the same tune with inter..either we wait until we concede to play decent football or we score early and as the game progresses we fade out of the game, strikers become isolated, midfield cannot play the ball to the attacking players and the defence presses self destruct around the 70 minute mark and it’s absolute chaos.Bare in mind we have subs on the bench capable to make and impact just the wrong decisions are made at the wrong time…really what is the point in holding back subs if your behind…And one thing i learnt growing up is you never fix something that isn’t broken, why switch formations and sub the best attacking midfield player we have for an out of form defender? The decisions just frustrate me and it’s always the same.
Yeah you’re right that is the problem with Inter we keep making these mistakes , what I am trying to say is that even if carrizo was good today or handanovic played we would have conceded more than 1 because our defence is bad. Its frustrating to watch our team in such problems but hopefully they will get through and improve
Carrizo !!!!!!!! You ppl serious!!!! Look at stupid a** Palacio !!! Second game he refused to pass the ball with a teammate WIDE OPEN!!!
I just can’t believe the outcome of that game! Stupseeeee
Mancini has done good things earlier in the Inter but then he came back , he has been worth fearing bad .
Defense game is completely without thought and unimaginably bad, he benches players who have been good and lets players make mistakes just continue to be poor .
The club has gone out and said that it is investing in Europe Leuge and so does he like damn Carrizzo in goal despite the fact that this is our biggest chance to reach the CL next season.
So fucking disrespectful to the fans and anyone who likes Inter, he should apologize .
His prey and match coaching is unimaginably bad, he is passive , waiting for a long time and also makes the wrong prey that when he takes out Hernanes instead of Guarin .
So what Mr. president? We are 3-1 now and we are 90% over, Just a miracle performance can survive us sir which clearly I hope to happen
Bro, do you even english? GTFO kid
Ask your mama about that kiddo, Dont play with me, if u want sth to play with u should have your mama’s permission first
This kid telling me I’m 15 LOL. Look at your replies. A third grader can come up with more original and offensive insults. Go back to school, your English is horrible
Butt hurt? Come and suck it, I like u when u try to play with it
Dude I’m telling you, I’m not gay. Why would you ask another man to suck your little thingy, and why would you enjoy that? Learn proper English and be more creative whenever you come up with “insults”.
it is all your fault mancio (carrizo) handanovic would have been saved all 3 goals for sure
I worry after reading this interview that he still plans to play him the next game…
He is committed to his tactics and strategies which are awful in certain moments, just like tonight!
Yeah exactly, I worry his stubbornes will cost us the game like tonight. I mean look at the matches, everybody had a weekend game and still played their main GK, but no, we will play Carrizo.
I remember mancio saying that carrizo is our Europa league goalie. Unfortunately we will see him again next week.
to be fair, he changed back to a back 4, admitting you’ve made a mistake so publicly is anything but stubbornness. i completely understand why he made the change in the first place, our fullbacks were being caught out of position too often, leaving either rano or juan to cover for them which leaves space in behind. i think a switch to a back 3 would have been the right decision have we not made the mistakes, carrizzo, poor guy had a bad game. all three goals could have been avoided; for the first and second he and juan are equally responsible, and the third purely him, its so frustrating!!
