After a tumultuous summer transfer window featuring two pre-season derby losses, we have come upon the first derby of the 2015-16 season. Inter came into this with two wins out of two while the Rossoneri came with just three points from two games. With the transfer window and its moves finally a thing of the past, this was the first game where the teams have been able to gel in their final form. Onto the Madonnina, one very awaited, on and off pitch Madonnina.
Milan lined up with familiar faces mixed with new hungry blood, of concern being the new South American front line:
Lopez; Abate, Zapata, Romagnoli, De Sciglio; Kucka, Montolivo, Bonaventura; Honda; Luiz Adriano, Bacca
Inter’s much anticipated & revolutionized 4-3-3 consisted of a very fast backline with Medel slotting into Miranda’s vacant spot, a strongman midfield, and a mercurial top three:
Handanovic; Santon, Medel, Murillo, Jesus; Guarin, Melo, Kondogbia; Perisic, Icardi, Jovetic.
The first half started at an incredible tempo. Both sides made it clear that pragmatism was a thing of the past. In the 2nd minute this became too apparent as Murillo gifted a lazy pass to Bacca who led Luiz Adriano to a shot on goal saved miraculously by Handanovic. Luiz Adriano showed great movement but lackluster end product all first half.
Inter showed a veracity in chasing the ball down and regaining possession, pressing Milan high and forcing erroneous balls. Felipe Melo showed exactly what was needed and expected from him; strength and experience. Grinta defined. Handanovic had a string of good saves before the 30th minute.
Abate was given a yellow card in the 20th minute for fouling Jovetic as Inter strung together fluid link-up plays. Medel showed great interceptions and strength in the air if his and especially Murillo’s positioning lacked at times. Milan showed good play on the left between the 35th and 40th minutes as a battle raged on between Juan Jesus and Juraj Kucka. The former Genoa midfielder drew a yellow out of JJ a minute before JJ put in a vital tackle in the box to start a counter.
Honda received a yellow as the tackles flew in and the true feeling of a Milan Derby became apparent. Inter began to rise again with counters towards the end of the first period. Diego Lopez made an incredible toe-tip save to deny Icardi a goal at the death of the first half after a mazy run from Jovetic.
All was even at the stroke of half time as both teams visited the locker rooms.
The second half started with both teams lining up as they began. The tackles flew in from the get go with Guarin showing an amazing one on the sideline. Crosses rained in from the Nerazzurri with no real end product. Perisic was able to find Guarin with a particularly good one from the left however. Jovetic began to lose the impact he had earlier giving away possession several times from good positions.
To take the limelight from him in amazing fashion, Kondogbia put together quite a few incredible runs, darting through several Milanese midfielders and defenders at a time. Ball seemed glued to his feet at times. Perfect mix of strength and panache. Showing his worth. Inter’s attacks however, were not showing worth.
Carlos Bacca came to with a dangerous run setting up a chance that went out for corner. Both teams began to lose connection in the final third and gave up possession quite a lot. The 50th-55th minutes were filled with corners and headed chances.
The 58th minute was filled with something else for Interisti; relief and jubilation. Guarin was fed through by Santon, and with Icardi’s run making space, Fredy curled a beautiful left-footed shot into the far post side netting. 1-0! If only that’s how he always shot the damned ball. Enough though, today he hears plaudits and no less.
Milan meant to react and certainly did in the 61st minute through the substitution of Bacca to bring on the mix of Judas, Anakin, and every tragic protagonist ever combined, Mario Balotelli. His first action was a dangerous free kick. He would provide more of those during the next 30 minutes. He would also provide plenty of drama and diving, but what’s new eh? One such occasion led to a Felipe Melo yellow card. A Melo yellow. A Mellow Yellow. A brand of soda. Anyway.
Just minutes later, Juraj Kucka tackled Juan Jesus after the Brazilian darted away from several Milanese attackers. This resulted in a yellow card and JJ being stretchered off to make way for Alex Telles. Inter came close to scoring in the 70th minute from an acrobatic header from Icardi deflecting out. Kucka would make another dangerous challenge that prompted his substitution in place of Andrea Poli. Inter would match it with Jovetic coming off in place of Rodrigo Palacio.
Balotelli made sure to take advantage of the situation and make as big an impact as he could. His dribbling seemed reborn as did his shooting as he danced into the Inter box, gaining a corner. Three minutes later, in the 78th he would hit the post from outside the box after losing his marker with a bit of flashy footwork.
Geoffrey Kondogbia would not be overshadowed in that department however, with pressure building on Inter, the Frenchman showed magical touches as he dipped and dodged a swarm of Rossoneri. Something else that dipped was a Balotelli free kick that Handanovic saved well. If he can’t do anything, he can still strike a ball.
One particular moment I loved during the match was after Milan’s substitution of Honda for Cerci. Guarin fouled Balotelli, and Icardi came sprinting to break up the altercation, Guarin smiled and held back. I love seeing that, especially from someone so many said could not be a captain and a leader.
Something really stupid followed, as Perisic seemed to injure himself attempting a pointlessly acrobatic clearance on the 18, fluffing the contact. Ranocchia came on for the Croatian. Milan’s attacks became more and more frantic and this forced the Inter defenders to make quick decisions.
Murillo made up for almost gifting a goal with one amazing interception-come-counter in the 86th minute as he slid and got back up to restart the attack. The Nerazzurri had a couple fluid counters in the next couple minutes, one ending with a corner after Kondogbia showed brilliant ball control again. Murillo attempted an overhead kick from the cross. Man that guy loves to attack. Exactly why I really want Miranda back as soon as possible.
Ranocchia made his impact on the game as he slid to tackle the ball out from a dangerous through ball for Luiz Adriano. Bonaventura, not Guarin, was shooting birds from several of the corners Milan had during extra time as Inter defended much more assuredly than in years past to hold the result.
Final whistle blew and I started writing this. AFTER running through the college residence hall I am the Resident Assistant on, kissing the badge on my shirt and singing. Forreal though, c’e solo l’inter doe…
This game was a relief, and should calm many nerves about Inter not being the real deal this year. Medel proved he can play in central defense for club, and not only country as well. That is nine points out of nine possible. Three wins out of three, and quite a litmus test for the new players, and the coach’s tactics given those players he had requested. We saw grinta back in our team, holding onto a result as part of our identity again. Now more of this.
Avanti.

Mahdi!! This typical writing. It really is you. Thanks for your review :). Anyway, hope the statistic and play we made have a good impact in this season
Hey thank you so much! I agree and wish the same. Avanti to Chievo.
only one in a million konws what does “tumultuous” mean
LIKE IT… thank you mahdi i love your article when you write in fedenerazzura
Thank you mate! You’ve always been awesome since then!
Inter will see its first draw or defeat soon because of horrible mistakes by defenders. Luck was on Inter’s side though, Murillo will cost Inter for sure.
You’re cursing twice about Inter and also Murillo kiddo, that’s not nice.. Win, lose, or draw is part of the game, you don’t need to curse it, silly.. Horrible mistakes by defender? Murillo will cost Inter? Make me laugh.. What do you expect, Froggy Groggy will make our defense stronger? That he will perform much better than Murillo? That’s another double mistakes over there.. Lol
You know nothing about football.
Unfortunately I couldnt watch the match but Juan Jesus is looking more and more solid in that left back position. How was Alex telles when he replaced Juan? Great work by the way!
Yes, Juje was one the best players on the pitch, shows great commitment and willingness to fight. Alex was okay, he shows composure when we were attacked and did some good dribbles. He just needs more playing time IMO.
Good job Mahdi.
Thank you Patrick!
this is why mahdi is one of my favorite writer in the internet 🙂 RESPECT!
Humbling me mate! Thank you so much!
A well written and balanced article, enjoying every phrase mate!
Thank you very much mate!
I agree with the above and also enjoyed the cunning bias in disguise.
Keep calm and love M&M’s as in Murillo, Medel, Melo, and Miranda..

Nah, we don’t need Froggy, Medel is covering the defense with him, he is complimenting Murillo so well and held the burden of defense in his shoulder, while Melo will be getting better and better next match.. We need Froggy indeed, to be sold! To get us some money to buy another decent CB or fullback or Striker.
Nah.. We need him as backup. At least until the end of this season
Backup? Now that we got Miranda as Juan’s mentor i do believe he can perform as good CB as well, there’s also Vidic who can become a good duo for Miranda or a compliment for Murillo when he’s back to healthy in january, plus there’s the Pitbull too, all three of them good enough for me as backups, heck if Andreolli is still around i include him too over captain Silly Frog.. If we can sell him for another decent CB or fullback or Striker why not.. I will worship Ausilio if he did that..
It seems that your daughter was raped by Ranocchia, wasn’t she? You seem to be ready to suck Murillo and lick Vidic’s dick too. What a freaky guy?
Me, freaky? Said someone with freaky words himself, go get some mirror for you dude.. Anyway if you’ve been watching Inter for at least the last 20 years you’ll agree that Froggy is one of the worst defender we got let alone an (ex) captain lol.. Murillo definitely much better than him, and yes Vidic is also better than him.. Go get a grip kiddo, Froggy sucks and that my friend is a fact!!!
well Rano is not that good, but is better than Vidic, who is enjoying a high salary by doing nothing—-
Well he doesn’t want to get himself injured i believe, he’s starting to gain his grip on his performances on second half of last season, too bad injury got him first.. I believe he’ll try harder after..
I think vidic is better than rano. Him and andreoli were good in defence. But it’s too much salary for a bench player
Guarin, you son of bird :* That’s a beautiful curved shot indeed, reminds me of Messi’s style. And that foul at Balotelli made my day. Keep it up, my bird man!
It was reminiscent of a Messi indeed (Neymar picked it up now also) accuracy over power. Fredy has more than enough power so really should see more goals from him this season as he has visibly calmed.
Of fucking curse Ranocchia would be cursed because he does that fucking all the time.
Murillo may have done some mistakes but he was crazy good too with a Medel and Jesus/Telles next to him.
A good recap to the match and as always was fun to read but I would refrain from making fun of guarin since some fans here will get angry XD
I hate that he can’t do that game in game out! We would be unstoppable uk..if any of our midfield players score 10+ goals this season in addition to 30-40 goals from attacking players and defence grabbing about 5 ..I see no reason why we can’t get top 3.
Someone on this site has a theory that guarin is inconsistent because of the players that played alongside him… lets hope it’s true (even though it’s highly unlikely)
It could be…given that his last best season came in 2012/13 season when the likes of milto, cambiasso and a good palacio were playing alongside him…who knows after this game no doubt the inconsistency would not be accepted now that he remindes everyone what he should be like
Good point now that you mentioned those players. Made a similar claim about him under Mazzari. Jonathan was a disaster. I think he felt forced into trying to spark the team up for a couple of seasons now hence the wastage in possession he gets criticism for.
Rarely does a Guarin mistake lead to a goal however. Ppl should also realise he is always scrutinized simply because he is always involved in matches. Icardi, Kiva could go missing for entire games at times
Yeah About Icardi..so far this season I’m not impressed.. He’s lazy on his runs and dribbling this is not the time for him to sit on his laurels we need the 11 players on the pitch to give it their all else I’m afraid they don’t deserve to wear the shirt.
Yes, i certainly dont buy into the just back from injury or ‘ring rust’ excuses.
I think its either Icardi getting ahead of himself with a captains armband, top scorer & links with big clubs or preferably:
I’m old enough to recall Mancini’s playing days. Clever players make clever coaches and having Icardi always between the CB pairing not running the channels like palacio… but hovering constantly on shoulders of the last man looking to get in behind. Has the effect of making the opposition play further back than normal and not as comfortable in possession.
Mazzari : 1 to 2 in opponents half off ball. Mancini: 5 increasing to 7 with ball.
That’s me. Guarin is not my favorite player, I defend him because we’ve all seen what he’s capable of. Inconsistent? Off course, but so was the rest of the team last season (the season in which the hate towards Guarin intensified greatly). Lucky for us there are barely any crap players in the team now, so I hope my theory is true.
We all do
Haha true, and I appreciate it mate!
I don’t hate Guarin, I just love to making fun of him. But I’ll stop since mancio trust him
I like doing it too but more and more people are taking offence
well written Bro 🙂 and FORZA INTER
FORZA INTER
Thank you mate! Forza Inter!
🙂
