The former Balon d’Or winner Lothar Matthaus spoke to SKY Sports about his time in Italy under president Ernesto Pellegrini.

It all goes back to 1990. Real Madrid came forward with an offer for the German player who had just led Inter to the 1989 Scudetto title.

“I met with Real Madrid’s president in Geneva. We found ourselves immediately in accordance with each other. I then went to president Pellegrini and told him of the offer, telling him that I wanted a new challenge after years of success at Inter. At that point, Pellegrini said, ‘See, Lothar, if you have a Picasso painting hanging in your living room at home, and it’s as beautiful as it was yesterday, you don’t just sell it. You are my Picasso.’ ”
