With Karim Benzema suffering what has been deemed a serious injury by club doctors, Real Madrid are on the lookout for a new striker who can plug the gap in his absence and also fill the gap that Los Blancos failed to fill when Alvaro Morata left the club.

According to French sports newspaper L’Equipe, Real have renewed their interest in Inter captain Mauro Icardi. The Argentine forward, who currently tops the Serie A scoring charts is not the only idea for the attack however. RB Leipzig’s Timo Werner is the other name.

The problem for the Bernabeu club now is to convince the players to make the move after manager Zinedine Zidane has continued to show faith in compatriot Benzema despite poor form for much of this season. Zidane backed Benzema during the Club World Cup which was around the same time initial links concerning Icardi and Werner surfaced in the press. After backing Benzema, the links seemed to cool but look to be heating up again now.
