Inter and Barcelona have not yet given up hope of signing Stefan de Vrij despite it looking highly likely that he will soon pen a contract extension with Lazio, Gazzetta dello Sport detail.

Should he – for whatever reason – not sign a contract renewal as expected by the 1st of February, he will be free to negotiate terms with any interested parties and move on a free transfer in the summer once his current contract expires with the Roman club.

Prior to Lazio’s victory over Udinese earlier today, sporting director Igli Tare was asked about the future of the Dutch central defender.

“I think de Vrij will sign the new contract. It is not easy to negotiate deals with the Dutch, but the player wants to remain.”

The 25-year-old joined the capital club from Feyenoord in the summer of 2014 and has continually put in good performances at the back for the Stadio Olimpico outfit.
