Gazzetta dello Sport have reviewed the contentious decisions in the 2-2 draw between Roma and Inter last night at the Stadio Olimpico.
On the 36th minute, Roma’s Nicolo Zaniolo worked his way in to the box and was tripped by Danilo D’Ambrosio. On first viewing, referee Gianluca Rocchi can be forgiven due to it happening in amongst a lot of bodies and not exactly easy to see. He could be let off for that had he been far away from the action but instead he was very close to it. Television replays clearly showed contact and it is a wonder how Michael Fabbri, who was in charge of VAR, never encouraged his colleague to take a second look at the incident.
Rocchi would then utilise VAR in the second half to confirm that the ball had hit off Marcelo Brozovic’s arm and Roma were rewarded a penalty which Aleksandar Kolarov subsequently tucked away.
Just minutes after awarding the penalty, there were calls for another but VAR was not used. D’Ambrosio played it long for Icardi who was bundled over by Kostas Manolas who very rigourously shoulder barged him when both players were inside the penalty box.
