Edin Dzeko signed a contract extension with Roma last night because he did not wait for Inter and Mauro Icardi any longer, his agent explained this morning.

The Bosnian striker brought an end to weeks of intense speculation over his future by tying himself to the Giallorossi until 2022.

Inter were confident of securing a deal for Dzeko and must now change their plans in the final two weeks of the transfer market.

Silvano Martina told Tele Radio Stereo: “Edin has Rome and Roma in his heart and these aren’t just empty words for him and his family.

“The opportunity of joining Inter was very real but we would have had to wait a little longer, and a player with Edin’s history can’t wait for someone else, such as the Icardis, to make his mind up.

“Dzeko was made to feel important in a big club like Roma and so it was easy to sign a new deal. He’s done so with great enthusiasm.”

Antonio Conte wanted to sign the former Manchester City striker to play alongside Romelu Lukaku this season.

He is no longer able to do so and Inter will have to find an alternative option between now and 2 September.
