Christian Eriksen does not have the qualities required to play as a deep-lying play-maker for Inter, according to the Nerazzurri’s former defender Beppe Bergomi.

Eriksen scored a free-kick against AC Milan deep into stoppage time on Tuesday to send Antonio Conte’s side through to the semi-finals of the Coppa Italia, where they will face arch rivals Juventus over two legs in the coming weeks.

Many suggested the goal could be a turning point for Eriksen, who has been tried as an alternative to Marcelo Brozovic in the regista role during January, but Bergomi is not convinced Eriksen is the answer in Inter’s search for a back-up to the Croatian.

“I am happy for the goal Eriksen scored,” Bergomi began while speaking on Sky Sport Italia.

“In Conte’s head he is not a starter, he is someone who can come in off the bench.

“For me he is not an alternative to Brozovic.

“That position is delicate and while we know Eriksen’s skills with the ball, he lacks dynamism and in this role you need to be very careful when you don’t have the ball.”

Bergomi, who spent the entirety of his career with Inter, then dismissed the idea that AC Milan were not in the game at San Siro on Tuesday as many suggested and the stat sheet also suggests.

“I didn’t see AC Milan struggling,” he admitted.

“It is true that they lost a bad game against Atalanta, but in the derby they remained in the game.

“Inter are a solid team and they always play the same type of game.

“Against teams that shut up shop, they can suffer, but if you face Inter head on and leave them space they can really hurt you.”
