Inter’s lead at the top of Serie A gives them a big psychological advantage for their remaining games this season, according to former Lazio goalkeeper Luca Marchegiani.
The Nerazzurri, who have been top of the standings since beating Lazio a month ago, extended their lead over nine points on Sunday courtesy of their victory at Torino (and the Rossoneri’s defeat to Napoli).
Antonio Conte’s side find themselves in a very good position to win the club’s first Serie A title since 2010, but in addition to having a points advantage, Marchegiani believes Inter also have a psychological advantage.
“Psychologically, now Inter do not have to win the game straightaway, they can manage it and wait to score a goal,” Marchegiani remarked in an interview with Italian broadcaster Sky Sport 24.
“Inter have a lot of solutions because, if Romelu Lukaku and Lautaro Martinez don’t score, maybe a defender will score like Milan Skriniar did against Atalanta.
“Conte has gone about it like this: he’s lowered Inter’s defensive line and this best exploits the characteristics of his players when they have space to attack.”
Inter are widely regarded as favourites to win the title this season, putting an end to Juventus’ nine-year run as Italian champions.
The Bianconeri do still have a game in hand against Napoli though, meaning they could yet close to within seven points of Conte’s side.
