Ex-Inter striker Julio Cruz has been discussing how excited he is to see more of Argentine pair Joaquin Correa and Lautaro Martinez playing together for Inter, according to a report in the Italian media today.
Speaking during an interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport, Julio Cruz explained how the two strikers’ relationship whilst playing for the Argentinian national team will be key for Inter going forward.
“The new twins of the goal? Yes, I like it, it is a correct definition. I saw the match of Argentina against Venezuela, together with friends. Lautaro and Correa find themselves as if they had GPS, they understand each other, they look for each other and they score. The fact that they play together in both Selección and Inter will make them even stronger.”
Julio Cruz also explained how he feels there are no longer squads filled with a multitude of quality strikers anymore, which is why finding a good partnership is so important.
“You know how the Champions League is going, you always have to prove yourself up to it. The truth is that there are no longer the squads full of great strikers as they once were, perhaps today only PSG has one like this; in my Inter there was for me, Crespo, Adriano, Vieri, Recoba, Martins, Ibra: it seems impossible to think so much in today’s football. Now, you have to choose well and their pairing is perfect.”
When asked if he prefers any other recent Inter strike partnerships over Joaquin Correa and Lautaro Martinez, the answer showed how Inter have struggled over the last decade to find reliable goalscorers.
“I don’t know, but it’s a top 10 duo in recent years of Inter strike partnerships.”
Julio Cruz believes that with Romelu Lukaku now at Chelsea, Lautaro Martinez will feel more settled and important. This coupled with Joaquin Correa’s strengths will be good for Inter.
“El Tucu is strong, technical, has character, he always arrives at the goal, what he has to do he does, he has two feet almost equivalent, when he has to score, he scores. And Lautaro Martinez, now that Romelu Lukaku is gone, yes he will feel more secure. You can see that they are looking for each other, they find each other.”
Inter are still in with a great chance to win the Scudetto this season because the team looks like it can play good football whilst having fun, according to Julio Cruz.
“You know one thing, besides being happy with Simone Inzaghi who I know well as an exemplary boy and professional: Lautaro and Correa give the idea of having fun playing together. When for a long time, with Mancini, I and Ibra was a couple on the pitch, many said we couldn’t play together. Not at all. Great goals and fun. And that’s how they seem to me: they enjoy looking for each other. And this can be triggering.”
