Inter CEO Beppe Marotta believes that the Nerazzurri are only inspired to perform at a higher level by comments by Juventus defender Leonardo Bonucci about last year’s Scudetto win.
Speaking to Italian broadcaster SportMediaset, the executive gave the view that the 33-year-old’s remarks that the Nerazzurri were only able to win Serie A last season because the Bianconeri’s level had dropped serve as motivation for Inter’s players.
Juventus won a record nine Scudetti in a row starting in the 2011-12 season, and Bonucci was a key part of the Bianconeri’s defense for all but one of those seasons when he was with AC Milan.
Last season Inter were the team to finally break the Bianconeri’s streak, winning the Scudetto in emphatic fashion, with a win against Juventus at the San Siro a key match in their march to the title.
Juventus return to the San Siro to face the Nerazzurri, and in the lead-up to the match Bonucci gave his view that the Nerazzurri had to rely on slip-ups by his side last season to become Italian champions.
“Leo is very skilled,” Marotta stated, “but his statement can only motivate us more.”
