Inter striker Edin Dzeko feels that the Nerazzurri paid for their inability to turn any of their chances into goals in their 2-0 loss to Liverpool in the Champions League.

Speaking to InterTV after the match, the Bosnian emphasized that the Nerazzurri had suffered from their lack of clinical finishing more than anything in the disappointing first leg defeat.

Inter aren’t out of the Champions League yet, but they’re teetering on the edge with a mountain to climb if they want to have any hope of turning things around at Anfield in three weeks’ time.

The Nerazzurri had put in a display that was encouraging and showed that they weren’t overawed by the quality of their opposition, but the lack of a real cutting edge prevented them from turning their best moment into goals.

Dzeko felt that this was the reason for the defeat, and that the Reds won on the night because they made the most of their chances.

“We felt the lack of a goal because I think that if we had scored first, it would have given us more confidence,” he said, “because we played a great match for seventy-five minutes and forced Liverpool to play a lot of long balls and conceded very little compared to what they usually create.”

He lamented that “It’s a shame to lose like this.”

“I think tonight we leave with our heads held high because we’re aware that we have given everything,” the striker added.

“The whole team fought for ninety minutes,” he said, “it’s a pity that in the end it wasn’t enough, but we gave everything against one of the best teams in Europe, and if you don’t score a goal then at some point they will punish you.”
