Inter wingback Matteo Darmian feels that the goals he scored for the Nerazzurri in a 1-0 win over Cagliari during the 2020-21 title race was one of the most significant of his entire career.

Speaking in the official matchday programme for today’s Serie A clash with Cremonese, the 32-year-old gave his thoughts on the significance of the goal which was one of the pivotal moments on the way to the Nerazzurri getting their hands on the Serie A title race for the first time in eleven years.

Inter were well into the second half of their Serie A clash with Cagliari during April of 2021, one of their last few matches of the season and a fixture in which three points would have represented a big step towards the Scudetto, and in need of a goal from somewhere.

There was no shortage of goal threats in the Nereazzurri’s team that day, but no one had managed to break through, until an unlikely scorer in the form of Darmian found the back of the net in the 72nd minute.

“It was not the best goal I’ve scored, but it was certainly among the most important,” the former Torino, Manchester United, and Parma wingback reflected.

“We took an important step towards winning our nineteenth title,” he noted. “The action started from the right, Lukaku made played in Hakimi, who put a good delivery into the box, I reached the far post with a late run and scored an important goal for myself and the team.”
