Inter striker Romelu Lukaku has spoken of his joy at returning to the club on loan this season, and was relieved to have been forgiven by fans for his departure two years ago.

The Belgium international enjoyed two prolific seasons with the club after joining from Manchester United in 2019, culminating in the Serie A title in 2021, before pushing through a €115 million move to Chelsea that summer.

After a difficult campaign in the Premier League, Lukaku returned to Inter on loan and in an interview with Italian television broadcaster Sky Sport Italia, and as reported by FCInterNews.it, admitted he held the Nerazzurri dear to him,

Lukaku also took the opportunity to thank supporters who had previously expressed their anger at the manner of his departure to Chelsea, claiming that they backed Inter through good and bad times.

“The Inter fans are really special fans, the best I have seen in the world. They are always there to help the team even in difficult moments,” Lukaku declared.

“I was surprised, I thought they were still angry, but I think a lot of people know that I have always had Inter in my heart, even though I left.

Meanwhile, Lukaku revealed that he wanted to remain at Inter beyond the end of his loan deal this season.

“I spoke with my team-mates and the club, explaining to them the reasons why I had left. I came back and I want to stay also in the future, this means that for me Inter is everything.

“Everyone knows that. Now the team and I have to lead the club to success and then we’ll talk,” he concluded.

After netting 64 goals in 95 appearances during his first spell at the club, Lukaku’s return has been underwhelming and injuries have limited him to just five appearances, with two goals.
