Inter’s summer transfer plans are dependent on securing qualification for the Champions League and a failure to do so will most likely see coach Simone Inzaghi dismissed.

As reported in today’s newspaper edition of La Gazzetta dello Sport, the Nerazzurri’s financial situation remains delicate and the plans of owners Suning rely on bringing in the considerable income of the Champions League, allowing them to continue with the squad as it is for the most part.

A second place finish in Serie A would secure €70 million into the club’s coffers and whilst there would be no lavish spending on new players in the summer, it would give Inter the flexibility to target useful additions.

This scenario would still require a major sale to raise funds, but it would most likely be limited to Denzel Dumfries and the club would remain committed to providing a competitive squad for Inzaghi, as well as ensure that a replacement for centre-back Milan Skriniar was brought in.

However, should Inter fail to finish in the top four or win the Champions League this season, President Steven Zhang is expected to sack Inzaghi.

Zhang is a strong supporter of the former Lazio coach but his position would be considered untenable and he would be dismissed, whilst the reduction in revenue of around €50m would require further sales.

In addition to Dumfries being sold, Inter would most likely need to cash in on a couple of other high-profile players, such as Nicolo Barella, Alessandro Bastoni, and Lautaro Martinez.

The club would then need to reduce it’s ceiling for wages, adding to the difficulties of attracting players to join for a Europa League campaign.
