Inter Milan have moved ahead of Juventus as the biggest wage spenders in Serie A for the first time since 2013.

This is highlighted in today’s print edition of Rome-based newspaper Corriere dello Sport, via FCInterNews. They note that the summer transfer window before this season was decisive.

Over the last decade, Juventus have been Serie A’s biggest spenders on wages.

Early in the 2010s, Inter had had the highest wage bill in Serie A.

However, the Bianconeri’s emergence from their post-Calciopoli slump saw them spend big on wages.

In recent years, however, the gap has narrowed.

Since the arrival of Beppe Marotta, Inter have started to enjoy more success in terms of trophies.

They have won the Serie A title twice, the Coppa Italia twice, and the Supercoppa Italiana on three occasions.

And just as importantly, participation in the Champions League has become virtually a given for Inter.

That has meant greater and more consistent revenues. This has allowed the Nerazzurri to spend more on wages.

Inter Overtake Juventus In Serie A Wage Spending For First Time Since 2013

For last season, Juventus still had a higher wage bill than Inter.

The Bianconeri had spent 125,6 million gross in wages, whereas the Nerazzurri had spent 123.6 million.

But that was the smallest the gap had been in a decade. And a sign of things to come.

Over the summer, Inter did not spend big in terms of transfer fees.

However, the Nerazzurri’s wage bill did rise. This was partly due to a big pay increase for captain Lautaro Martinez as part of a long-term contract extension.

Then there was the arrival of Mehdi Taremi and Piotr ZIelinski on free transfers. They may not have cost Inter any transfer fees, but they are fairly high earners.

For Juventus, it has been the opposite situation.

The Bianconeri invested around 200 million in transfer fees over the summer, as they made some big money signings to built a new team for coach Thiago Motta.

However, the players who arrived in Turin have largely been on lower wages.

On the other hand, a number of Juventus’s biggest earners left over the summer. These including Wojcjech Szczesny, Adrien Rabiot, Alex Sandro, Federico Chiesa, and Filip Kostic.
