Mauro Icardi: “Gagliardini will be another Nerazzurri brother”

Inter captain Mauro Icardi gave a lenghty interview to Gazzetta dello Sport speaking on a wide variety of subjects ranging from the differences between coaches Stefano Pioli and Frank De Boer to Roberto Gagliardini’s proposed transfer to the Nerazzurri.

What have you been working on with Stefano Pioli?

“Mainly the mental aspect, on our concentration, also because everything starts in your head. We’re only in January, half of the season remains to be played.”

Speaking of Pioli, what has changed since he arrived?

“He has changed Inter’s mentality, he has given confidence back to everyone, also to those who didn’t play so much under De Boer and who despite the change in the coaching staff still don’t play that much.”

It was therefore necessary to send a signal…

“The situation under De Boer became unbearable. The players that played less were genuinely unhappy didn’t participate with hardly any desire, even during celebrations, when the group was happy. Now with Pioli the atmosphere is different. Now, those who don’t play that much feel part of the project and are happy to be part of this group.”

Have you understood the magnitude of the project Suning wants to embark on?

“Yes, of course and it’s exciting to feel so involved. The owners objective is to return to the Champions League, a tournament worthy of Inter and which gives you the best exposure worldwide. This is what Inter’s history tells us. With Moratti it was like this, under Thohir this intention was present and now with the Zhang family this will be relaunched again. The project, to bring the club to the top is based on Suning’s great passion and desire.”

Gabigol scored a decisive goal albeit in a friendly. How does is his insertion into the team proceeding?

“It’s normal that people expect more from him, a huge expectation was created when he arrived this past summer. However, Italian football doesn’t look a lot at young players, it expects results instantly. However, he needs time to work and he is working very well every day.”

Pinamonti is even younger than Gabigol as he’s born in 1999. Do you see a younger Icardi in him?

“I see a humble kid, who doesn’t talk a lot, who applies himself and listens. All the qualities you need when you’re that age. When he played in the Europa League against Sparta Prague I advised him not to overdo it, to play like he does in the Primavera otherwise things wouldn’t have gone well. He made an assist for Eder’s first goal.”

How do you imagine things will look like in 10 years time? Maybe with a couple of Scudetti and a Champions League title in the trophy cabinet?

“I hope to be able to lift many trophies wearing an Inter shirt. I also hope to be able to do so in less than 10 years time. When I decided to come to Inter I did so because I am an Interista and because I wanted to win a lot of trophies wearing this shirt. So yes, I see myself with a couple of league titles and at least one Champions League title.”

Do you know Gagliardini?

“Not personally no, I’ve seen him play. If he were to arrive he’d be welcome, we’ll welcome him willingly. he would become another Nerazzurri brother.”

Recently, Jovetic’s agent expressed disappointment regarding the relationship between you and him, stating that it’s not the coach who picks the starting 11 but the captain.

“You can’t think that decides who plays, it’s something that just doesn’t happen. I have never chosen the starting formation. Otherwise what’s the point in having a coach?”
