Antonio Candreva’s performance last night for Italy was under par in the eyes of Azzurri fans worldwide and the Italian media largely echoed fans views with their ratings which were published earlier today.

Gazzetta dello Sport and Corriere della Sera both gave the Inter winger a 5/10 rating, Corriere dello Sport gave him a 5.5/10 rating and Tuttosport gave the 30-year-old a 6/10 rating.

Candreva was making his 53rd appearance for the Italian national team last night as Gian Piero Ventura’s Italy drew 0-0 with Sweden which in turn meant Italy would not be attending next year’s World Cup in Russia.

The former Lazio man has made 12 appearances for Inter this season and provided four assists and is one of few players to have started every single game. He joined Inter last year in a €22 million move and is under contract with the Nerazzurri through to 2020.

Behind Italy’s elimination, there were 2 reasons. An immediate reason was Ventura’s fault. He had no stabilized system and formation and he didn’t notice that 3-5-2 was not working in current team. You cannot just put aging and former Juve defense (Bonucci-Barzagli-Chiellini) again and again. Plus, you cannot play Darmian and De Sciglio as wingers, and you can’t play without a solid midfield pair and a playmaker. Why Ventura did not choose following formation, for instance?

    ————————————- Belotti —————————————–
    Insigne ———————— Jorginho ————————— Candreva
    ————— Gagliardini ——————— Verratti ————————-
    D’Ambrosio ———– Bonucci —- Rugani ————- Zappacosta
    ———————————– Buffon ——————————————-

The second and fundamental problem was Italian national football team is just a shadow of 2006 champions. No reforms at all.

he played like a serie c player

I am really sorry for him though. We all know he doesn’t fit 3-5-2 system. Ventura put him on that system and it just didn’t work him. I wish this elimination doesn’t affect his performance with Inter.

      • JAY

Im very sorry aswell, this is why I didn’t want inter to be come Italianized, Italians players are not what we think

        • Sean Patrick

Respectfully, that’s bullshit and I’m not an Italy fan. Italy has a great crop of young players coming through and we should have more faith. Now we see ourselves loaning Ramires instead of just having Benassi.

          • JAY

No, screw buying Italians, we are not going anywhere with it, def. a No on benassi also, they are not anything and im a big fan of italy

          • Stefano

Ventura was a complete disaster, but, with a good coach the good Italian players are good ,the bad ones are bad ,like any other country’s players,
They have an advantage of being easily adapted to Serie A,compared to someone arriving straight from a foreign league.

          • JAY

great player adapt easily like Wesley snejder

          • Stefano

Yes but the Snejider case, the perfect piece missing in the puzzle is in the minority.
Serie A tested is more often the safest bet.
Look at our mercato last summer, it’s a perfect example of it.

          • Stefano

Ramires is coming for free ,so good deal.
But you are right about Italian young talents ,look at Chiesa ,
            Amazing player.
            Benassi…meh.

          • Sean Patrick

I hope those rumours about Chiesa are true. He is so good. Better than Berardi and Bernardeschi.

Benassi Is still only 22, and an can surpass Vecino. Lucas Torreira is amazing as well.

      • Aaron

That and I’m still not convinced about him as a player on the whole…we all know he has some sort of quality bottled away…hopefully anyways…but if he’s not gonna prove it week in week out then i don’t think he deserves to start for inter or italy alike. This season for us he’s been bad..and there’s no guarantee that he’d have played any better in another system…with that being said Ventura really made some bad decisions…like reaaaallly bad ..you don’t leave insigne and belotti on the bench..are you crazy? Makes me wonder if he even watches Italian football..smh

        • Stefano

He is our leader in assists this season.
Exactly like he was last season.

          • Aaron

Well…i think anyone of us on this forum would have at least half of his assists when he crosses so much as he does…the problem I have with him is he’s one track minded…you know it’s either get to the bi-line and cross or cut inside and take a ‘hit and hope’ shot from outside the box which to his credit most times tests the keeper and we get a corner from it..then he takes the corner and overhits it or can’t beat the first man. That’s my issue with him…defensively he’s one of the best wingers we can get on the market but he’s not being paid for that now is he? Yeah he has the most assists as of last season..but you can see for yourself where we ended up last season.Point is he needs to make the most of his chances to help the team out more…

      • Stefano

With Conte and before him with Prandelli Candreva he had his best performances in Italy NT with the 3 defense.
