Atletico Madrid player Sime Vrsaljko had a phenomenal World Cup as his team Croatia made it all the way to the World Cup Final, where they lost against a brutally effective France outfit that became the 2018 World Cup Champions on Sunday.

Inter have long since identified Vrsaljko as their number one transfer target in the right-back position, following the departure of Joao Cancelo, and the club have taken several steps forward in their attempt to secure a deal over the last few days.

Italian sports newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport explains the current situation: “Now the club is just waiting for the right time to finalise the deal with Atletico Madrid, after having gotten the yes from the player himself (after turning down a number of other Italian clubs) for quite some time now.

“Inter Sporting Director Piero Ausilio cannot and does not want to go deeper on the matter for the time being – in any case it would be useless, since the player is having a post World Cup vacation, and because Inter cannot go beyond a loan deal with the right of redemption [which they have already offered to the Spanish club].”
