Tale of the tape….. Courtesy of the statistics site  Whoscored.com – here are the numbers that mattered from Sunday afternoon’s game.

The Good…..

Inter finally kept a clean sheet. After a run of six matches where a at least one goal was conceded, the Nerazzurri backline held firm despite the continued absence of defensive linchpin Hugo Campagnaro.

Despite the surprisingly low pass completion rate for Inter as a team, Ricky Alvarez was immense. With an 89% pass success rate, three key passes and a goal, Alvarez was a key part of the Nerazzurri’s impressive victory.

Rodrigo Palacio was everywhere, a goal an assist, two key passes, plus the Argentinian international lead the team by winning four aerial duels to relieve the pressure on the Nerazzurri defence.

After replacing the injured Walter Samuel, Rolando slotted into the Inter defence with ease. He made seven effective clearances which was the highest on his team.

Fredy Guarin had nine successful dribbles, this equaled the highest amount by anyone in a Serie A fixture this season.

Inter are now the top scorers in Serie A with 27 goals.

The Bad…..

Very hard to pull out negatives when the team has just won 3-0 away from home but here are a few:

As a team, Inter won just 35% of their aerial duels.

Inter attempted 44 long balls, just 19 of them reached their intended target.

Juan Jesus (58%) and Fredy Guarin (59%) had the lowest pass success rates for Inter.

The Ugly…..

Juan Jesus got himself booked for time wasting and will miss the Livorno match. More frustratingly his petulant reaction by smashing the ball away and giving possession back to Udinese was further evidence that a mature, winning mentality is still a work in progress.

What the gaffer had to say……

Speaking to Sky: “Today was one of the best games we have played considering the high level of our opponent, even against Fiorentina and Juventus we gave good performances and today we wanted to impose the game as we would have played at home. That is what I try to accomplish without being influenced, but we must improve our ball possession when we go ahead, especially when we play well it doesn’t reflect as much as it should. “

Esteban Cambiasso also talked to Sky: “I talk a lot on the pitch? That is something I have to do in my role as a captain. Mazzarri said that I have returned to the levels of the days when Mourinho sat on the Inter bench? I like this team and playing together gives us satisfaction, as a player you know there are games that make you suffer and there are games that make you feel amazing.”

Ricky Alvarez on challenging for a top 3 finish…….

Speaking to Premium Calcio: “Champions League? We’re only looking forward to every match, we’re still growing. If we’d been a bit more cunning in our previous fixtures we would have had a few more points, that’s really all we’re lacking. We have to improve on this.”

Rodrigo Palacio was also interviewed by Premium Calcio. “It was a difficult pitch to play on but today we played very well, we gave a perfect performance. These three points are very important. To much weight on my shoulders? This is a great team, I want to thank my team-mates for playing the ball to me as much as they do.”

Other notable tidbits…..

Samir Handanovic didn’t show any signs of the injury he suffered against Atalanta which will be a welcome boost to Walter Mazzarri.

Javier Zanetti was named in the squad and could be seen shouting and encouraging the Nerazzurri players from the touchline.

Injuries to Walter Samuel and Andrea Ranocchia combined with the suspension of Juan Jesus are a concern. However (especially in Ranocchia’s case) the injuries aren’t thought to be serious.

Mauro Icardi wasn’t even fit enough for the bench. He may face an operation this week.

Ishak Belfodil will return from his suspension against Livorno.
