On Sunday, Inter take on Atalanta at the San Siro. As usual, Mazzarri answered questions about the upcoming fixture and about the current squad. The press conference was held at Giuseppe Meazza. Here’s what he had to say:
Can these close games say something about getting back into the race for Champions League?
“When we have had a decent schedule, we have found it difficult. We have to respect everybody and with our mentality we have to work on ourselves because if we do good, we will make it difficult for everyone, even the smaller teams. Just like we did at Verona.”
It can be said that the counter attack can be improved?
“In some occasions we arrive in the attack with a certain ease, then we have to choose the best solution. Sometimes we do everything good until we get into the area and we mess up our final decision, just like we did at Verona. That is what we have to improve.”
Secret about the solid defense?
“Our organization helps us in this aspect. The defense participates for each game, they all train the same way and they all know that they have to protect themselves, even the defenders.”
Win tomorrow to jump in quality?
“Atalanta is a very difficult opponent for many reasons. They are practically safe and have great class. We have to think that we have to give the maximum.”
Moratti said that, if we gave more in the beginning, the third spot could have been possible. Agree?
“We have left points on the street for a series of motives and then we have lost points because of bad luck, with episodes that they have penalized us. Yes, there’s regret.
Can only one summer calm the gap with Juventus?
“There is still a lot of time until the end, in football I have understand that you have to think of the present and you need balance and judgement. The end of this season will be very important for next season.”
Juve has had a lot of time to become tested, is this the difference?
“In the recent years I have always looked to give a perfect identity to my teams. Sometimes it employs more, but in general I’m the same with Cambiasso: players with their quality go on the pitch. The best examples are the players, the more they get better, the higher they will go.”
The last time Giacomelli was the referee at the San Siro, things didn’t go well. Will there be pressure?
“I hope not, I always say everything I think: they have to do their work their own ways, without thinking of which team or which stadium.”
FcIN asks: Ranocchia has found continuity, has he earned your trust?
” I watch him on the pitch and now he will most likely start. Whoever goes on the pitch on Sunday and is favored by me will be chosen. Everybody has to think about the squad and to win because if you play bad, you can lose your spot for the next game. There needs to be competitiveness.”
FcIN asks: Can Alvarez play even further up the pitch, to give Palacio a rest?
“It can happen, to have many important players is very useful. Sometimes you win with changes and for me it’s fundamental to have changes. Here I have very similar players, I can make changes.”
Have you always believed in Jonathan?
“Even at Napoil I thought about him, I knew his characteristics and he only was missing something. My style of play allows the wingers to do good, I hope he continues like this. To do good we have to find continuity.”
