Gazzetta dello Sport reports about Inter’s latest signing Gary Medel on the frontpage of today’s newspaper.
The Milanese newspaper reports on the Chilean’s characteristic´s as a player, interviewing former Inter striker Ivan Zamorano who describes his compatriot as a “mix between Diego Simeone and Paul Ince, he never leaves the pitch without having given everything.”
The newspaper reports further on the transfermarket stating that Juventus have their sights set on Inter-target Stevan Jovetic.

I would like to thank you for your time at Cardiff you gave your all Cardiff got money they have 1 m/f 2 c/b in by Friday and 1.5mill pounds towards another player from the 10 mill they paid for you every one happy we have lost our four best players also four wage packets the squad is about 34players 6or7 str plenty of goals this year good luck Gary
With the condition that we don’t have enough money to get player that we need, so far Ausilio do a great job.. all risk transfer (dodo, osvaldo, medel, and also m’vila) is still on loan with an option to buy.. if they can’t give contribution, we don’t need to buy them.. Beside that, i think this year, inter transfer we be best transfer after we got the treble because of we get a great characteristic and charismatic player in position that we need that we dont have before..
M’Vila and Osvaldo are pure loans with no obligation. Dodo we must purchase if we play him at all. It’s effectively a deferred payment. Medel is a cash deal paid over 2-3 years.
But I agree this transfer market has been the best by far since the Treble days.
I’d rather a footballer than a warrior. You know, someone with technical qualities and creativity on the ball.
Oh well. I look forward to once again watching a team with no midfield potency, stacked full of players who can’t play a dangerous ball if their life depended on it (Thank God for Hernanes and Alvarez, if he lasts the mercato)
While I agree for the most part and favor footballer vs warrior the reality is that’s not how we’re setup to play under Mazzarri. We’re not going to play a nice buildup style of play so having all technical players isn’t going to work.
I don’t mind one tenacious fighter in the midfield if the rest can contribute creatively. With Medel alongside Kovacic and Hernanes I don’t see a problem, especially if Dodo lives up to potential on the left. Right side is a worry as I don’t see D’Ambrosio contributing much going forward and we all know Johnnies tribulations (great at times taking people on the rest of the times…). The real problem may be depth in creativity. I know M’Vila is good all round with a nice touch but that’s about the extent of my knowledge… Not sure if he’s useful in a true creative sense. Ricky is a decent squad player at best, and while he can create he too often is predictable or terminates play unnecessarily. He can stay or go as far as I’m concerned.
We really do I feel need a support striker cum winger… a forward rather than a striker. Jovetic would be ideal, Cerci a decent second choice.
As for defense Medel can be useful in a back 3 but less so in a back 4 (2 center backs) given his height.
Good post, particularly regarding Mazzarri’s aversion to technical, build-up football.
However I disagree that we (prior to Medels arrival) were lacking a ‘tenacious fighter’ in the midfield. You admit you haven’t seen much of M’Villa. If you had, I suspect you’d agree the role was occupied. M’Villa is a strong defensive presence in the midfield, he shores up the midfield, and unlike Medel, is damaging in possession. He possesses vision and the skills to execute.
You are right in your statement that all players in a Mazzarri setup needn’t be technical, although I’d suggest we are severely deficient in this department nonetheless . Only Hernanes (and Alvarez when starting) are elite in this regard. There is always a place for real footballers in a team. It is up to a coach to find a role for them amongst his footballing philosophy.
I wasn’t saying we lacked a tenacious fighter… I did hear enough about M’Vila (and saw him briefly at the Real game) to know he’s a combative player. I was more saying a team can afford one player in midfield who isn’t technically gifted if they contribute in other areas, like doing the dirty cleanup and aggressive pressing to free up the creative players. However without true skills you also need smarts… Reading the game, knowing when to press hard, not over committing, and generally knowing and playing within your limitations. I don’t know if Medel has these qualities but from the reports I hear I assume he does.
I admit I was a little curious when we went for Medel after M’Vila arrived as I thought DM was covered. He does have different qualities to our other players though and given his ability to fill in in defense I expect he’s seen as a useful utility player.
I would like to see us get a more technical forward as I think that’s where we a are missing some true on the ball skill. Palacio is awesome but more of a hard worker and team player than creative. Botta is too raw.
Btw. Is there any reason you’re discounting Kovacic as a technical player? With a midfield with Hernanes and Kovacic we have a good amount of creativity in the middle, especially if M’Vila is the anchor. Plus if Dodo’s early form continues and he can contribute on the left. There are still gaps of course, and a lack of depth, but we do have more quality technical players than you seem to be saying.
Ausilio has done a great job so far:
1. Vidic
2. Dodo
3. M’Vila
4. Medel
5. Osvaldo
Now we have to secure Cerci and Rolando.
Some people are easily pleased.
M’Villa and perhaps Vidic are the only transfers on that list that could be considered ‘great’. M’Villa in particular, a fantastic player, about to enter his prime that we (for once) secured for far less than his real worth, and on modest wages. For that, Kudos Ausilio. A truly great piece of negotiations.
Dodo looks a promising talent, although his redemption is set far higher than it should’ve been, given his free transfer to Roma only last season.
Osvaldo, as we all know is a high risk/high reward player. He may shine, or be a cancer to the team. But I’m not completely against the gamble given his modest price.
And 8mil for Medel is absurd. We lost Coutinho for less FFS. Medel has no technical ability, nor can he realistically play CB in Italy despite his aptitude for the position. M’Villa was a sufficient acquisition in our endeavor to shore up our midfield (with the added benefit that he is fantastic on the ball). We have effectively paid 8mil for Gargano. Those scarce funds could’ve been used to inject some potency and talent into the middle of the park.
This side lacks the talent, flair and skill to contend the scudetto. We really need a reliable presence up forward (a dominant center forward or target man), another advanced midfielder or deep-lying play maker with vision and passing ability, a winger of higher calibre than D’Ambrosio and Jonathon, and a CB.
Plus we have failed to move off any of our dead weight, and we look set to lose these players at a significant loss.
dude, you’re too parsimonious.
Dodo buy clause set at 7 millions. yes perhaps it’s a little bit high for now. but we loan him for TWO years.
if he’s become something in next two years, 7 millions would be cheap. if he’s not shining, we don’t have to buy him.
and for medel, that 8 millions will be paid also for TWO years. it’s a fair price.
and we sold coutinho for 12 millions, used the money for Kovacic, what’s problem with that?
I’d say I’m a realist opposed to a pessimist. It just so happens that this particular realm of reality has been underwhelming.
And I’m afraid you’re assertions are simply incorrect. In a typically ridiculous Serie A transfer, we’re obliged to purchase Dodo outright after his first game for 8mil.
Medel is also being purchased outright in several installments. No loan period to speak of in either case.
And technically, we lost Coutinho for 8.5mil, of which 7mil was used for Schelotto.
Seriously ? This year transfer looked very good, especially from financial aspect. 3 of our biggest transfer so far are really impressive in the pre-season. Vidic is a leader and still world class, Mvila is an useful player & Dodo show his potential and willingness to fight. The upcoming transfer : Dani Osvaldo come for really low cost that make even a hater like myself silent, Medel transfer make cardiff fans outrage and spam on this forum LOL.
I do hope you do well next season [ we have £1m riding on it! ].
I only really know about Medal & Vidic , who are both good readers of the game and can play at a slow pace but neither is blessed with any pace and both have questionable temprements.
Having two of this type of player in the side might be your downfall, however it is a different type of game in Italy compared to the premier league so who knows?
Anyway as I said – buona fortuna.
