”We had a great first half, we conceded a goal at our first mistake. We continued playing after conceding, we attacked time and time again without giving Verona any opportunities at all. After that we struggled a bit while playing with ten men, which is normal. Also, let’s not forget that we are in the middle of a bad run. The late goal from Verona was predictable. It’s a shame, because if we had moved the ball around a bit more we could have left the game with three points”. This is what Walter Mazzarri said to Sky after the 2-2 game at home against Hellas Verona.

Is a slow passing rhythm the problem? “Verona try to block everything in front of their own penalty area, and in spite of that we managed to find the cracks in their defence. It’s obvious that you need patience when you play an opponent like Verona”.

Ahead of the game, Erick Thohir talked of victory as the only objective tonight. Is he disappointed? “A bit of disappointment is normal when a game ends like this, and when everything seems to go against you, like Medel’s two yellow cards. The first card, in my opinion, could have been avoided by the referee”.

What happened to Icardi? ”He thought that I was blaming him for the goal we just conceded, but what I wanted was to ask him if he could stay on the pitch for another half a minute. I was already going to sub him, but he also asked me to do it. There are no hard feelings, my relation with Icardi is one of the best that I have had with a player in my career. It was only a misunderstanding in the heat of the moment because he was nervous about losing the lead, like we all were”.

What went wrong at Verona’s last goal? “Sometimes we are a bit slow when it comes to understanding the situation and we get outplayed. We could have avoided putting ourselves in a hurry, but we aren’t used to waiting: we always attack”.

Is Thohir’s project still realistic? “The project is for three years. And let’s not forget that we are still evaluating the young players who are going to be the backbone of Inter in the coming years. Obviously it is hard for a club that is normally at the top to understand that it is going to take some suffering. The team has had a couple of tough games, but now we are on our way back. Everyone is fighting for the team”.
