The rumour mill is in full swing, everything between a long term renewal and a big money transfer seems possible for Inter’s Mateo Kovacic. Roberto Mancini’s arrival can’t disguise that the current Inter squad seems to lack the required elements for a serious run at a Champions League spot. So you would think that selling one of the brightest prospects the club has seen in a decade seems illogical? In the right scenario maybe not. Whilst Kovacic is undoubtedly a player who has all the attributes to succeed at a top club such as Real Madrid, he is still very much a work in progress. The fact that he has still to find an ideal role within the team (considering how weak competition for places is) indicates this is the case. With genuine talent at Inter so thin on the ground, Kovacic at just 20 years of age has been forced into a situation where he is a protagonist for the side. This kind of pressure is far from ideal when a player is still trying to find the strengths and weaknesses within his own game. If Mancini and Mazzarri before him had seven or eight ‘elite’ players taking the load off youngsters such as Kovacic the side as a whole would function at a much higher level. The truth is Inter don’t have the money to acquire that type of talent so find themselves stuck between a rock and a hard place.
Selling youth to invest in more youth is a mugs game. Deals such as the one which took Philippe Coutinho to Liverpool thus providing the funds for Kovacic can only get you so far. One plausible scenario for selling Kovacic would be to raise the necessary money to acquire two known quantities: Alessio Cerci AND Ezequiel Lavezzi for example. With those two on board feeding any one of Icardi, Osvaldo or Rodrigo Palacio the team could think about making a jump forward. Timing a big sale is the key to not only getting the maximum value but also to prevent a negative impact upon the team. Good examples of this are Falcao’s transfer from Atletico to Monaco which enabled them to find space for Diego Costa. This summer Simeone’s men once again changed strikers, using the money from Costa’s sale to buy Mario Mandzukic and Antoine Griezmann.
So back to our original question: Is now the right time to let Kovacic move on? No. The factors that lead us to this rather simplistic answer are mostly just common sense. With Kovacic’s talent standing out at such a young age, keeping him for another one, two or even three seasons is not likely to see that perceived value diminish. If a new contract until 2019 can be agreed upon Inter can extend any decision Kovacic’s future far beyond the next two to three transfer periods. In the summer of 2015 there is no tournament for senior international footballers, giving players a much needed period of rest. This will be extremely beneficial to Kovacic who is already showing the signs of fatigue following a World Cup and constant first team selection. A full pre season after a summer of relaxation whilst under the guidance of Roberto Mancini gives all the indications one would need to think 2015/16 could be Kovacic’s true breakout year with the Nerazzurri. After that season the young Croatian will undoubtedly (bar injury) be a protagonist for his international side during Euro 2016. These are all factors which point to Kovacic’s value only being on the rise during the next 18 months. Barcelona’s eventual need to replace the likes of Iniesta and Xavi is another reason for the Nerazzurri to hold fire. There’s nothing like an El Clasico on the market to hike up a price tag.
The alternative to all this of course is investment. Should Erick Thohir back Roberto Mancini in the market and propels Inter to a third place finish there will of course be less of a need to consider the sale of talents such as Kovacic. In short, Piero Ausilio and Inter can afford to bide their time rather than rush into an ill conceived sale of such a valuable asset.

it will be mistake to sell mateo and icardi
sell Jonathan, H. Campagnaro,J. Obi, G. Medel, Z. Kuzmanović, F. Guarín, R. Palacio we need new players
If Icardi can make more than 15, and JJ can strongly fit and consistant, they price will be higher too. just no more selling young talented players. We already have back, mid, and forward young star, we will get new identity soon, the team from “always buy star players” from “the star maker team”. just like atl madrid and arsenal did back ago.
Great article. I agree, keep the young man. He has an upside. While there is much for him to prove, he appears to have a great attitude. Sell him in several years. At best, inter will mimic Fiorentina’s sale of Jovetic to Mancity.
Well if it was between him and Icardi i think we should let Icardi go especially if he scores between 15-20 goals as much as i like him if by some miracle we do qualify for the Champions League we would need a more accomplished striker
NO!
Too early to cash Mateo. Just take a look at Juve that has not cashed on Pogba yet. With all the potential we know from Kovacic, he can get so much better, so we can sell him for no less than 50m.
For me, its okay if we sell icardi for 30-35 million euros because there are many strikers or goal poachers and fox in the box who are alot better than him. But in case of kovacic, i disagree because he still have a lot of chance to grow and improve as a players. Plus, he is only 20 now..however, if the offers are more than 50million euros. We should listen and consider about that
but no one that young and good striker
Well good experience striker is better.
we are focusing on developing young talents to become engines of our team in near future
Yes mate. But young talents has become business nowadays in foootball. Sell it in the right time with the highest price as possible, and then put the money to quality player and another talent. That’s how atl. Madrid, dortmund, arsenal, roma, compete in market. When I watched the derby i realize that you cant win championship with a bunch of kids.
I really like the job of these clubs but you should have much luck to work like that
instead of luck, it was more of a teamwork. how the management support the coach by giving him players that he wanted and he really needed instead of taking anyone that we can get our hands on
and that is correct
Don’t you dare sell him! sell icardi for 30 mil, or sell Guarin for 15 but never kova T.T
The management, even ET will face us Fans if this issues going to be true…
he cant make an impact so it is up to us to decide – either develop players or aim for CL.
Sell Kuz and Guarin, bring back Crisetig and buy Cerci. That should be enough for the CL
guarin is on fire with mancini
he only played one game and we have to sell someone to buy more needed (and I belive more useful) Cerci…
who will than play in mid.
Medel, Kova, Hernanes as first choice and Mvila, Obi, Crisetig, Krhin as replacements
subs are not strong enough too much diference in quality
I agree, but at the same time I can’t remember Guarin doing something good for the team. On the other side, we need Cerci more and therefore we need to sell someone to gain money for him. His pricetag is at 16m (app) and that would also be the price to sell Guaro
i would go for konoplyanka cheaper and younger
Makes sense
Great argument Ben. I agree with your final conclusion but the other side is how long can we hold onto him for. I can imagine him staying if we fail to make the Champions League this year but fail again next year and I can imagine his eyes might be on the door, same with Icardi. Personally I would like to see us bring Crisetig back next season as a deep lying playmaker (gotta be better than Obi, Kuz, Guarin and potentially M’Vila anyway) and nurture them as a unit. In terms of Lavezzi and Cerci I dont think Inter can afford to bring in ready made stars any more. We should be looking at players in early to mid 20’s who will maintain a resale value.
if Inter keeps struggling like this, it is Kova’s best interest to go elsewhere… and i would understand it. too bad we have one of the biggest talents Inter’s ever seen and he doesn’t have proper playmates on the field
agree to 100 %
if this club really need some cash, they better cash in on icardi instead of kova. and that should be for some large chunk of money
And much better cash on Guarin, Kuzmanovic, Obi, Campagnaro, Jonathan, as a last resort Hernanes if we desperately need money. If you want to build something and sometime in the future be able to complete with big fishs like we did 2010. JJ, Kovacic and Icardi must be the backbone for the future.
deadweights are deadweights. how much do you think we’ll get by selling them? and the biggest question is would there be any team interested in them? i had big doubt about that. then you also forgot to mention that in 2010 we sold our biggest star that time, ibrahimovic and gather enough good players to fill this team gaps on other sector as well from his selling. so, as i said it before, if we really need some cash, then better cash in on icardi and keep kova and especially juan. for me juan is the only unsellable between those three. but that is if we got some good offer for icardi instead of selling our quality goods for any offer that came
I’m forgotten guys like Schelotto, Pereira and probably someone else. We have to offload the deadweighs firs I think.
Not a great time to sell…..it would be extremely wrong. The situation in the market is really hard, players prices are over inflated and unless we don’t inflate our players prices too, we won’t be able to compete in the market. We’ll lose extremely valuable players who are still growing and has immense talents that hasn’t reached maturity yet! We need to keep Icardi and Kovacic for at least 2 more seasons IMO.
Look at Suarez with Liverpool, biggest example out there. They bought him for 25m and sold him for 80m! that’s great business. We shouldn’t rush our horses with our stars. I wouldn’t mind selling Icardi for 35m+ but Kova can bring in more, he has more capacity to grow than Icardi.
You think Suarez is good business….How About Juventus Paying 1 mill for Pogba – now that is great business !
If wouldnt sell him. He should be our new zanetti. Staying until 40 at inter
so do JJ and Icardi.
We can cash in big on both Icardi and Kovacic as soon as tomorrow, but where does that leave us? I’m scared of new Schelottos, Perreiras, Kuzmanovics etc. Wouldn’t sell them myself.
I’m not afraid of that. Now that we have the right man for the job in Piero Ausilio.
I might be ok of selling Icardi with the right price but not Kova.
