Gianluca di Marzio reports that Inter is close to signing Atlético Madrid’s Miranda:
Inter is aiming to reinforce the midfield but not only that. Mancini’s team is active on the mercato looking to reinforce many parts of the team and most of all the defense. The new name at the moment is Joao Miranda, the Brazilian defender born 84 currently playing at Atlético Madrid. Miranda is currently playing with Brazil in Copa America and Milan has been chasing him the last few days.
Miranda has been on of the most important players of Simeone’s team, being fundamental for the defensive solidity together with Godin. Now the defender can leave Madrid and Inter is ready to compete with Milan. Inter is keeping continuous contacts for the player and he could cost 13-14 million euro’s plus bonuses, the deal is close to be done. Inter is hoping to finish it during the coming hours and Miranda could be the first gift that Mancini has been expecting.

I’m wondering, why Inter fans doesn’t think a little bit more. Why Miranda will wanna leave Atletico Madrid, one of the strongest teams in Spain and Europe, when he’s undoubted starter? And why he will want to change team who regularly playing in elimination faze of Champions League with another who just play in Serie A? I think that he’ll looking for long-term contract with huge salary, because he’s already 30 years old. And now the question is can we afford to have Vidic, Ranocchia and now Miranda, three central defenders, which will be one of the highest paid players in the team?
Miranda is in his final year of contract with Atletico so if they want to sell him it has to be now really. Why would they want to sell him? Well as Simeone observed recently keeping 3 fully fledged international centre backs happy when you can only play 2 is a challenge. Gimenez is the future for Atleti not Miranda. Godin is slightly younger and it’s well known Simeone really counts on him as a leader of the team. The fact he’s the uruguay national captain helps. Miranda will appreciate his future at Atleti is not so certain as it’s been the past few years especially considering the younger Alderweireld is on loan (also a fully fledged international) and Velazquez will probably return this summer or next to compete for a starting berth.
Top players don’t follow money or trophies. The money and trophies follow them. The players just want consistent game time. Miranda would easily clock up 90mins week in week out at Inter but that’s a real doubt next season with Atleti.
As you might have noticed I have thought about this. I can’t see why Benatia would leave his starting xi spot at Bayern as it’s guaranteed next season. But i can see why Miranda would leave his.
(For just to show how much i’ve considered this… Miranda has the experience of playing beside the great defender that is Godin and also of playing beside the messes that are Marcelo and David Luiz. He covers for many a foolish mistake and we could really really benefit from that.)
It gives me a boner when i think of a partnership between miranda and vidic along with santon as lb/rb…one more proper fukl back and for once I don’t have to suffer watching our defense being torn apart
I just saw that Murillo arrived 30 seconds too late to stop Venezuela scorinbg in the Copa america, it reminded me of JJ – No sense of position. I hope it was a one off.

When Inter won the treble, our central defenders were Samuel, Lucio, Cordoba and Materazzi. Samuel and Lucio were 32, Cordoba was 33 and Marco was 36. Age doesn’t really matter.
Yeah, defender mostly reach their peak career at 30s age. Even John Terry is one of the best defender this season in EPL !!!
What surprised me was Vidic’s poor form last season. He was one of the best defenders in the world 4-5 years ago.
its hard for him to play with 3 Man defence. Also, its wasnt easy to play with Rano 😀 They were just not a good combo. I still believe he will be great next season with new defenders. I wish He can be paired with Miranda.

And one Year after Treble lucio play like shit and benitez ask for new def , Two years after samuel and cordoba , in the end after 3 years we see this defence . Age is important.I am happy for miranda but if we get a young def i am more happy.
Agree, I will be happy if Inter sign Miranda and one young defender. Or (if have no cash) just promote youngster from primavera. Jesus is still young too. Miranda can be a great Tutor for him (and other youngster). They are both Brazilian.

That age is peak times for a defender. Plus we need leaders in defence and hes perfect, so i dont mind him
not really , i’d say 28 is when defenders peak , only difference is defenders don’t normally lose ability until 34-36 .
The age of peak defenders is between 28-35. Just look at John Terry, Barzagli ( though he dint play much this year) Puyol before retired, Godin ( hes 32). Sometimes young isnt that good aka Mangala. Id pay that money any day on proven tough defenders than young unknown especially with the mess we have now
yeah , john terry didn’t lose his ability, but his “best years” were 5-7 years ago . peak=26 to 30 while actual defensive ability can last for years . a striker like ronaldo won’t play until 38 because he relies on his speed , while a defender can play until he’s 40 (maldini)

We Still have Vidic , and all saw what he did last year , peak times for defence 27 – 33 . In football you see just one JZ4 or Maldini.
Vidic was done before he moved to Inter. Plus he was a physical kind of defender which dint use much of his brains hence why he failed in tatical
