This Sunday 16th August, Inter will play their last pre season friendly against Greek side AEK Athens ahead of the opening day of the Serie A season.
According to reports in today’s Corriere dello Sport, Inter coach Roberto Mancini could field the 11 players that will start against Atalanta on 23 August, in this friendly.
This is the probable line up for the friendly against AEK Athens according to CdS:
Handanovic; Santon, Miranda, Murillo, Juan Jesus; Guarin, Medel, Kondogbia, Kovacic; Icardi, Palacio.

I think he plays Juan at left back all wrong. Juan should not be attacking thay much. He should be there to allow a cover of 3 CBs when Santon attack s which should be on the regular. We need to use players strengths. Santon is good attacking and defending is so so. Therefore make him an very attackING rb and Juan can allow the defense to slide over for cover in a pseudo 3. Agreed but Juan is a poor defender as well. A good example of a defensive Fullback is our own Chivu, difference was he was slower but had a good left foot and knew how to read the game, he also was good in the tackle… Juan not so much. I would rather deploy Rano as RB and Santon as attacking LB than use Juan… at least Rano is good with the ball at his feet and can make long passes. Sure he’s slow but at least he can read the game…
I was just thinking about chivu too. But this idea with rano is something. Not a bad idea in the least. A giant 6’4 rb lol but he would be under less pressure in the rb position and he might thrive more being that defensive rb
If Mancini plays anything another than 4-3-1-2 then he is out of his mind. One week left of the start of season and he still experimenting.

he’s arguably played best as a rcm box-to-box style. I think he could start off from the right and maneuver… kinda like how cassano always starts by the right byline and mazes his way in.
I wish you were a little more tactically versed my friend, this isn’t football manager, a player can start in one position but be instructed to make different movements in attack or defense.
Fact is he doesn’t have the solidity to play centrally unless he is flanked by 2 box-to-box types in K-dog and Guarin but that forces them to stay back and makes us liable defensively. The game is initially won in defense so we need that to be solid with a mid of guaro-medel-k-dog with brozo-gnou as the subs.
Kova needs to step up to the AMF role, it really should be his best position since he has the pace and dribbling to make it his, he can start a little retracted or drop deep to pickup the ball like sneijder used to do (and hernanes does)
Fact is he is statisticly better then pogba on CM position(and by CM i mena RCM CM or LCM). He have more taken balls, more good passes, more sucessful tackels etc.
He does not move well to play AMF, he is still missing last pass or shoot or move. He always drible past 3 player and then shoots wide or pass wrong or make one step too much. He does not use space when he plays on wing or AMF. He sill does not know how to receive ball with backs turned to it. There is just too many thing he needs to learn at once to be good on wing or AMF. Even as wide midfielder he is not good. He needs to play as b2b or playmaker, regista no metter where on DM, RCM, LCM or CM. But not as wing or trequartista or wide midfielder he does not move well for that. And Mancini knows that and Mazzarri know both have tryed to play him as AMF and both saw he is not good there as in CM.
Kova is good in passing and creating chances from back so he would be good regista with 2 b2b like Juve do play.
Or just RCM with defensive midfielder like Medel and one B2B by him.
I like what you said but saying he doesn’t move well as trequrtista or amf is wrong. He has the qualities besides shooting and that is because everyone is probably telling him to pass all the time. He needs confidence and that’s it. He plays beautiful balls to icardi in that role

actually with his less def capability kova should be considered as AM.. an AM player requires good dribbling and passing skills and he got that.. he only need to boost his self-confidence when he’s on the opponent’s area. if i were RM, i’ll do my homework to teach him how to shoot rather then ask him to tackle & marking the opponent. a DM player have to be disciplined in zone marking, which is not his shit, he loves to be anywhere.. give him free role as AM. it’s bad to fielded him on our def area IMO.
Mate, I understand all this, I wrote a blog post when Mancini arrived about how he was going to turn Kovacic into the best trequartista in Europe (Mancini was a trequartista himself and wrote a whole thesis on the role. so I figured, like you did, that Kovacic is perfect material for it).
But he tried and it didn’t work, so I don’t expect him to return to that. Actually, Kovacic gave his best performances in an Inter shirt as regista if you ask me, but the squad isn’t balanced enough to have him play there (we need another good central midfielder, for example; and neither Brozovic nor Kondogbia still seem to be on the right level, the first flopped pre season and the 2nd hopefully only needs time to blend in).
Let me remind you that Pirlo played as regista for a long time, and he never was too well developed in defensive duties, he only had a very good understanding of the game, which Kovacic should be developing wherever he plays.
I read your article. Really liked it. Was very hopeful. I agree that he would be a good regista and if kondogbia gets to his awesome self with medel by him too it will allow kova so much space as a regista. I hope so much
from millions example players with abilities like he has, they played in attacking role.. instead we forces him to copying 1/decades-born player like pirlo.. why we dreams more for the unlikely one? I really like him and hopes someday he’ll be our next sneijder.. but now I dont care where the best position for him is what do I care is whats the best for Inter.. I just want to see Inter back to the european elite clubs and along with it would love to see his name listed in the best players too.. but I hope we knows which one is our main priority..
