Inter is a winning team again after the unexpected defeat at home last Sunday against Torino. The match at Matusa ended 1-0 for the Nerazzurri thanks to a header by Icardi. With this success Roberto Mancini’s team temporarily shortens the distance to Roma, returning to -5, pending the Giallorossi match against Bologna on Monday night. In the usual post-match press conference, Inter coach Roberto Mancini analyzed the 90 minutes that have just gone into the archives.
Jovetic tends to leave Icardi too lonely in attack because he moves back a lot, but today he proved to be one of the few able to turn on the light. Would it be possible to reconcile his presence with the tactical needs of the team and the need for Icardi, even in the upcoming season?
“Jovetic moves back because he has different characteristics compared to Icardi. He opens spaces, he is on the frontline to take the ball and does what he needs to do as a second striker. The winger must then enter and attack as they did especially in the first half. Jovetic did what he was supposed to do.”
Icardi has reached 50 goals in 100 games with Inter. How far can he go?
“Icardi is a great striker, he will improve continuously over the coming years.”
Why did you make the choice of relying on Jovetic and not Eder or Palacio?
“Jovetic returned after the international break. He had trained well and we need that kind of player that plays between the lines. ”
Are you happy with the performance of the team?
“I’m angry because we had to close the first half at least 2-0, but we don’t take advantage of opportunities because of errors in our finishing. It’s obvious that you may encounter trouble in a field where, in the second half of the season, only Juventus won. At Inter you are always looking to see something wrong, but I think today we played a very good game, against a team that has made it difficult for everyone on its homepitch.”
Do you think Inter was better today than in the match against Torino?
“In that match there were episodes that affected the game. It was impossible to think that we could win in a match being down to nine players. That match was fine, but we couldn’t score the second goal and then got lost because of the episodes. Today better? Even against Torino I saw a great Inter.”
For the next market, are you focusing on the power of ideas or a rich budget?
“A rich budget (laughs).”
Why were the substitutions made only after the 40th minute of the second half?
“We were playing well, we needed the speed of Biabiany and Perisic. I thought of changing around the 30th minute, Eder and Palacio were ready, but then came the goal and I replaced Melo and Telles because of small muscular problems.”
