Roberto Mancini spoke to various media at Appiano Gentile in his press conference ahead of Inter-Empoli tomorrow evening at the San Siro in what is Inter’s last home fixture of the campaign:
The press conference started at 16:30 and the manager was quick to dispel reports coming out of France linking him to PSG, “They have a coach who won a lot, it’s false.”
He then progressed onto reminding his team what was expected of them tomorrow, “We have only to win to reach the fourth place, I didn’t like the match against Lazio”.
Mancini then went on to speak about errors the squad have made over the course of the season, “It happens, squad does some things well and other bad, it’s a part of our growing, I hope thinks can go always well but it doesn’t happen every week. The real Inter is the team in fourth place, we had the opportunity to arrive higher but I think it’s the right Inter.”
When asked if Erick Thohir was happy with Inter this season Mancini said “I don’t know, we start always trying to do the max, we try to win because we are Inter, then arrives another target and we look what has gone well and what not and improve by errors. We have been at first place for 20 matches, surely we have good qualities, now we can restart from this.”
The 51 one year old tactician then spoke on the Milanese clubs current situations,“A team can’t win for years and years without difficult moment, Inter and Milan have been at the top of the world until some years ago, now they have a difficult moment but I think that working hard they can grow and improve even because we are in a moment in which other teams in the world are stronger”.
He also joined many in congratulating shock champions of England Leicester City, “Leicester is something incredible that in Italy could not happen, but maybe also in England for next years”.
Mancini gave nothing away when asked about new reports saying Adem Ljajic will return to Roma at the end of the season, “We don’t know, we have to play more games”.
When asked about Inter’s away form, “We need still something to have continuity at home and away, we must work and improve, otherwise we could be higher in this moment in the ranking”.
Mancini also insisted that knowing what Thohir has install for the club isn’t entirely his business, “It’s not my work, I am here to win on the pitch, I work to let Inter win and president thinks about the rest”.
New players will come over the summer he added, “The team have some fix points that some months ago didn’t have, we must buy new players, someone will go away but the base remains. Last year in this moment we didn’t think to sell Kovacic, Guarin Shaqiri, but then we had to do it even if we didn’t want. Market gives you some occasions that sometimes you must exploit”.
Asked if any players were indispensable, “If we were in Champions League it could be important for Inter name, but the economic difference between Champions and Europa League isn’t so big. We must try to improve team in any case, we have closed transfer market with a budget surplus, we have done a good team, we didn’t arrive in Champions but we will try next year. I think some players can be indispensable but it depends on president”.
He closed the press conference by detailing what he expect from Empoli tomorrow, “They’ll come here to play and have fun so it will be difficult. Supporters have always been near to the squad, we are happy and let’s hope to do a good game”.
