“Belief is key to Inter revival”

Newly appointed coach, Vecchi had a few words to say following the Inter-Southampton Europe League match Thursday night.

“We have top-quality players in this squad but we need confidence to get ourselves out of this situation and we must find the way to manage games better,”

“The team produced a tidy, spirited performance today at a tough ground against a very physical side. We did well on the break in the first half but made too many mistakes after the interval. We need to do better with the ball in the opposition half – we need more quality in our play.”

Vecchi decided to play a 4-4-1-1 with Ever Banega up front in support of Mauro Icardi.

“Banega has got character and quality about him and for large stretches of the match he showed that, although he dropped off a bit towards the end. When we managed to pick him out between the lines we fashioned some decent chances. I think he gave his all – they all did.

“We didn’t have much time to work on tactics, although we did run through a few things and I think you could see that tonight. We won’t have much time to prepare for the next one either as it’s already right upon us.

“I tried to convey positivity. We played with great intensity but unfortunately there was less quality to our play in the second half – certainly not as much as a team like ours should be playing with.

“We went close to securing a result but came up a bit short in the second period and we paid for it.”

Vecchi added a quote from writer, Paulo Coelho: “’The Warrior of the Light is a believer and because he believes in miracles, miracles begin to happen.’ We don’t actually need miracles. It’s going to be hard for us to qualify now but we still have hope.

“We have to get ourselves on track in the league now. Sometimes you need to play 95 minutes at a high tempo in order to win the game. We were found a bit wanting there today.”
