Before celebrating 15 of Fundacion Pupi, Javier Zanetti speaks to journalists at the Mercedes Center about Inter’s current situation:
Fifteen years to your foundation, now also a new project, ‘Let’s build an us’, what is it?
“As always I thank the Italian people for the trust and support. The new project we want to form a chain of people who can contribute to the future of children”.
What is your reaction to Inter’s defeat against Napoli?
“Unfortunately, at Napoli it was a very bad defeat, it was an important match but our attitude was wrong and against Napoli everything is more difficult. It’s a very negative period lasting much time, it’s useless to talk about it. Only facts are important, it’s time to be conscious about what’s happening. We can’t accept this ranking, our trend must be changed because the ranking is clear. But we have to change. It’s our duty, at the end of the championship we’ll make our evaluations”.
Third place is still possible?
“We have to try, for the sake of the shirt we wear. It’s complicated, it’s true, but we must find the strengthens to solve the problems. Pioli had a great impact, we are pleased for his words about the management. He’s a coach who knows the problems and will try everything to change things. Nobody likes this situation, the owners want to bring Inter again where they were in the past. Their thoughts are long period and they have a sense of family and respect to Inter. Let’s overtake this moment and then will make what’s important to be back high levels”.
Yang Yang has promised exceptional purchases for Inter. Should we expect something already in January? Have you spoken to Zhang and Thohir?
“A positive thing is a ownership with great ambitions, but now we have to focus on the remaining matches. We are too many and out of Europa League, we need to transfer some players”.
What impact did Pioli have on the team?
“A big impact, he said he found a nearby company that supports it and likes that. We have found a coach who wants to prove himself, and understands the difficulties but will try all out to find solutions”.
What is the feeling that you have when talking with the owners? How do they feel?
“I think they have the feeling of everyone, including the fans and players. Nobody likes this feeling. But they have a lot of desire to bring Inter to the levels of the past and to be protagonists. Then I realized that they have a sense of family and a great sensitivity and respect for Inter, they hold dear. We must try to overcome this time then we will see what we can do to go big”.
Simeone Jr. said his father will coach Inter one day, and Diego has confirmed this, your thoughts?
“On Sunday I’ll greet John, I saw him grow up and I hope he won’t make any joke about us. What will happen in the future who knows, we focus on the present, on Pioli, the solutions and aim to get as high as possible. Nobody knows the future”.
